Well my smith suprised me last Wednesday with a call saying my rifle was done. I have him true, tread, chamber and install a #3 fluted Broughton barrel in 260 rem and a Wyatt ext box. I had an HS sporter stock ready for it, but didn't think it would be done for hunting season. I picked it up and loaded some ammo to sight it and try a few differant bullets. Thursday I found a load and got it sight in quikly. 140 vld Berger. The rest of the day I loaded 50 rounds of ammo and packed the truck. We left at midnight and were glassing a wheat field at sun up on Friday. To my delight there was a good buck on the field. Because i did not have had a chance to scout our hunting ground this year. I stayed well off the fields until I knew which fields the deer were using. As soon as he headed off into the river breaks I went after him. We hunt some large river breaks on the Cheyenne River in Western South Dakota. There are lots of deep figure draws. My dad went one way and I the other, I got lucky this year. 252 yards and the 36 shot out of my new 260 yeilded this 5x5.

My dad took a smaller buck that night but we were unable to locate him in the dark. The next morning we found him and so had the coyotes. His is on the left. I'd feel bad about shooting the bigger of the two, if I hadn't put him on a 197" non-tip three years ago.

I was thinking the same thing. Hybrid??

Re: New rifle =my best Muley

SD often has Hybrids, I have seen plenty including the occasional he-she like the one my pops took a few years back. Nice big 4x4 with no nut sack.
Nice Mule deer fellas! I am still trying to get mine out in the prairie of South Western SD. Been out for almost 6 weeks strait...(not counting pheasant season of course) tryin to get close enough. Started after him archery, couldnt get close enough. First weekend of rifle season I decided to try with the bow still. Last weekend didnt see him, (hope no one else got the gronk) Going back out for 4 days this holiday season to give him one last stalk...If he survives the poachers, he'd be in the 190's next year.

pd721etl,

Nice buck! What do you think of the terminal performance of the 140gr Berger? What size exit hole did you have? I used the 140gr berger VLDs for the first time this year out of a 6.5x47, and I was pretty shocked how much damage it did.

The jury is still out on the 140 VLD for me. I only loaded a few 100, 120 Ball tips and the 140 VLD's due to the time crunch. The VLD grouped the best so that is what I went with. I hit the buck high on the left side of the rib cage. He about 200 feet lower then I was and quartering away 252 yards. There was substantial blood at the point of the hit and a good blood trail on both sides. It did not knock him down and he ran about 50 yards. Unfortunately that’s 50 horizontal and another 50 vertical. I found him with his rack stuck in a cedar tree, but he was still alive. I put a second round in him to insure he dint get free and deeper into the hole he was heading for. This was broadside at about 30 yards. There was 3 inch hole on the exit side.
I later shot a smallish doe broadside at 310, the shot felt good. It knocked her down instantly and she stayed down for 20-30 seconds. She then got up and ran off. There was NO blood trail at all and after several hours I was unable to recover her, disappointing.
I will try and find a load for the 130 Accubond as I think this will be the better hunting bullet for this gun. I I have hunted this property for 10 years and the body size of the bucks is impressive, so a little tougher bullet will likely help.

The VLD's almost need to be ran into the shoulders to put them down. My experience with them anyways... Try the Hornady SST. They are great for deer and elk too. I use the 168 VLD with great success, but it is always a shoulder shot and it breaks them down.
