I ;just bought a Savage 110 FP in .223. It is a pre accu-trigger model, and that is problem #1. The trigger is pretty bad, heavy and gritty. 2nd it has an aftermarket B&C stock with an add on cheek rest, OK so far, but the attachment screws heads are starting to round out and there is none for the rear trigger guard screw (the stock hasn't even been drilled for one.
3rd. It just plain doesn't want to feed cartridges out of the magazine. Looking at it I can't see any burrs or other physical obstructions, but the rear of the shells want to drag and the bolt just slides over them most of the time. Any suggestions?

Finally, I need a scope, I just pulled my 3X9 off my deer rifle to test it, but soon I'll want to start stretching beyond that scopes capabilities.

On a positive note the gun has no problem shooting 1/2 MOA groups off a bench with decent ammo, (my hand loads of 68 gr HPBTs over 26.0 Varget), so all the work seems very worthwhile.

Re: New Rifle need help.

you got crap stuff, junk it all and move up to something more worthy of your time....

if this is a crisis project for wayward orphans, then i would start to contact the makers of said junk and query them as to why their "stuff' is sub-par.....but still....this is all nothing but brain damage in the making

Re: New Rifle need help.

1st Go to Fastenall and have them match you up some new screws.

2nd The trigger guard screw thing can be taken care of at Fastenall at the same time. Shit, I have taken my rifle in there before when I needed some odd size/threaded bolts and they were more than happy to help me out. They will find a solution for you.

3rd Clean the crap out of everything. Remove action from stock and clean the trigger assembly. Fine sand and dirt particles can get in everywhere and make stuff feel like crud.

4th a good quality scope that is not too expensive like a Burris TAC 30 4.5-14 should do the trick for ya and they have a lifetime warranty and can be found for under 300 bucks.

5th Make sure your mag is completely engaged in the BM. If so, you may need to take a dremmel tool and make the inlet for the detachable mag bottom metal deeper so the mag sits up a little higher to engage the bolt with the cartridge. Sounds like the pillars may be too long or the bedding job was not done quite right. Remove a little material at a time until your problem is resolved.

A trip to the Fastenall and a couple hours worth of work should have you back up and going.

Best of luck.

Re: New Rifle need help.

She just need a little love to get her up and shooting. If you feel you want to scrap that junk I will be the first one to offer up some cash for it.

First of all it sounds like bubba got a hold of it. First thing the stock. You can get new screws from Savage or Sharp Shooter Supply for ~$10. The back screw just need a pilot hole drilled and it takes a wood type screw.

Second the trigger. There are very nice aftermarket triggers, the best is from Sharp Shooter Supply. easy fix too.

Third the feeding. Your gun was probably a put together from misc parts or some one bent the mag or it might not even be the right mag. I would suspect the mag lips are bent out allow the rounds to stick up to high.

Re: New Rifle need help.

I didn't make this clear, excuse my omission, but it doesn't have a removable mag, but a blind one. Surprisingly there is no bottom, the spring just seems to push against the bottom of the stock, this seems improbable, but there it is...

Also, I didn't make clear what my goals are for the rifle. As it is a .223 I don't see this as a true long range rifle. Rather as a learner and eventually a re-barrel to .260 for a true long range capable rifle or simple use as a wood Chuck gun. Mostly I want to learn as much as possible about shooting from various positions, reading wind, bullet drop, etc. AS I reload for my AR already it seemed a good idea to learn on a .223?

Thank you, and sorry to not have been clearer in my original post; I hate it when someone leaves out valuable information and everyone has to guess what they are looking for.
