New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

dude same deal for me. i was looking around and actually i just bought the same gun but got the HS precision stock from savage. seemed easier than messing with aftermarket. the mcmillian looked cool, but it was $200-300 more than the HS. im happy with it. then i bought a millett scope. wanted a mark iv, but i dont have that much $$ now i think i want another plain fp, barrel cut to 16 or 18 recrowned and in a mcmillan a4 stock.

Which Millet scope did you buy? I was looking at one also with the 30mm tube, how would you grade and compare the scope quaility?

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

well i wish i knew enough to give a good opinion. i was told this was a good scope at the price. ebay best offer was $320 and i got it for that. its the 4-16x50 tactical w/ ill reticle. the knobs are smooth and locks positive. the focus is big and stiff so my giflfriend digs it, whoa!! no but it is a little stiff to turn. finish was great and it has a velvet cover, flip ups, sunshade. its a 30mm. there is a positive detent at 10x and i got my rings from there too. from where? from optics planet!!free shipping! midsouth shooters supply has a millet in 35mm body tube with rings, i think its $400ish. i like the millets but if i could afford it, i would like leupold lrt or an s&b. but then id have it on a $$$$$ rifle so its all relative huh? everybody i have talked to with one or both of these gun/scope components has been happy

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

Install a Shilen Match barrel, oversized recoil lug, MCM A5 w/ side flush cups, CDI Prec bottom metal, AZ prec bolt knob, Murphy Prec 20 moa base, rail for atlas bipod. Then you're GTG.

Assuming you have quality optics and can shoot better than the rifle.

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

Did you go with the single or two piece base? I was looking at the single base: http://swfa.com/Millett-Picatinny-1-Piece-Base-P9662.aspx

Not sure of the pros and cons with either?

As far as scopes are going, I have been looking at the Nikons, but not sure how the Milletts compare with the same $$. If I had the funds, I go with a Zeiss hands down.

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

i went with the one piece from evolution gun works EGW, without the 20 MOA. i just like the one solid unit better. i wanted a nikon tactical plus a free mildot master, but got the for some reason. i looked at zeiss, plus swarovski. schmidt & bender sounds like the way to go if you get the lotto, lol.

hey macman2564, whats the /CDI prec bottom metal? got a link to that? i think its the answer to a question i posted in the gunsmith forum

Here's a link to the original post from Jeff @ CDI Precision.
CDI Precision Savage DBM system.
Jeff is a good guy and does great work. I just got my stock and DBM system back from him a couple weeks ago and love it.

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

i love to learn. had i known i would not have gotten the detachable mag version of this gun. so does jeff do all the work or just sell the product? i see that he inlets the stock. i have a hard time finding a good trustable smith locally

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

Stock? Manners T4A....

I'm saving up to get a T4A for my 10FP, it's in a Stockade stock now. I can't wait to get it into the Manners...

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

Look into Choate tactical stock if you haven't already. Very sturdy and ruggedly made. It looks a bit cheap because of the polymer, but a camo job takes care of that. There's a few reviews on here if you search for it, most seem to like it.

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

Look at the EGW base, they sell them on ebay also, you cant go wrong for the money, also the bell and Carlson Medalist stock, both of those will save some money for glass, which I recomend the SWFA Super Sniper, there you have a relativley enexpensive shooter.

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

Jeff will inlet your stock for $60, you just ship him your stock, wait about a week, get it back and due some minor adjusting then enjoy. I had him do my Choate Tactical stock for me. Just my two cents but for the money the Choate stock is hard to beat, I really like it.
Figured I'd snap a quick pic.

so after he inlets the stock, i can install the bottom steel myself? it just fits and bolts in and there is no adjustment to get the mag to work? i saw that you have a new knob but cant see if you have an accu trigger. i like the look but the mags are pretty high. ever see them cheap?

Yes after he inlets the stock, you can install the bottom metal yourself, with just a little adjusting. You have to cut down the front action screw (he provides both new action screws with the purchase of the DBM system) it sticks up into the action a little bit and needs to be cut down then you may or may not have to adjust the mag feed lip, which he provides a diagram of. Here's a little better pic of the DBM system.

As far as the AI mags I've not seen them much cheaper but you could try these.

Yes, it's the Choate Tactical.
Choate TACTICAL Stock for Savage Short Action

As for the bottom metal being flush, if you look in the first pic you can see that the stock angles upward as it gets closer to the forearm, so there's no real way to get the bottom metal exactly flush with the stock.

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

macman what stock ddo you have?? looks good otherwise. but that would really bother me function or not. i could live with it, but... like peter say, its like dating a hot chick with a messed up laugh.

Re: New Savage 10FP, what next & stock options?

I haven't gotten it back yet. It is still there. But I doubt if it will. If it does it will be only slightly more so. I'm not too worried though, it does what it is supposed to and does it pretty well. I put about 600rds through it on leave and it didn't fail once.
