New Savage Model 10 in B&C Medalist will it fit?

I'm not sure exactly what model this rifle is. It was a package deal with a Bushnell scope. I can't find it on the Savage site. It is a Model 10 308 that looks the same as the 10FP with a Sporter barrel instead of the bull barrel.

I'm working on upgrading this and was about to order the B&C Medalist stock but noticed a warning on the site about newer models have 3 screws instead of 2. I did check on mine and it has 3 screws.

I was really hoping to be able to just drop the action in the new stock but it appears that is not the case.

How much modifying will I need to make on this stock for it to fit properly and how difficult will it be?

Will I run into the same problem if I go with the Choate tactical?

On the older model 10s you'll have two action screws and one screw for the rear of the trigger guard. Take a measurment from the first screw you come to when moving from the muzzle end down toward the buttstock, then the second. That's your spacing.

1st. Gen Short Actions = 4.522" (1959 to 1987, staggered feed magazine)
2nd Gen Short Actions = 4.275" (1998 to 2006, staggered feed magazine)
3rd Gen Short Actions = 4.400" (2006 and up, center-feed magazine, not shown in photo below)

If your Google Fu is strong you can search for more details on the exact model of Medalist or Choate you're looking at. Most resellers will tell you which item number is for the action you have (second gen sporter with 4.275 spacing).

As far as fit, my Google Fu when sourcing a stock indicated that second gen Savages will usually drop right into the correct Medalist or Choate tactical stock. They've been around a while and the molds are proven. There's always a chance you might have to break out the Dremel tool, but not likely.

I thought I was purchasing the correct stock, I know it has the 4.4" spacing and it is a centerfeed model. Which means I would need B&C mode 2997 (someone in the forum had pointed me in the right direction before I knew anything about the screw spacing).

What worried me was this quote from a site:

"Note: Some newer Savage models may have 3 action and trigger guard attachment screws on the bottom instead of 2.
These will require a slight inletting using sandpaper at the rear of the trigger guard for a proper fit and the drilling of a hole for the rear screw"

That's what really confused me.

They are talking about the Accustock models (mine). There are two actions screws and the wedge screw (3 total) plus the trigger guard screw. Putting an Accustock action into a B&C Medalist or the newer Choate Tactical requires a little bit of work. The bottom metal is different, even though it uses the same mags.

So you have a centerfeed, 4.4 spaced, sporter barrel scope package with "Model 10" on it? I don't know when they started calling the CF sporters Model 11s. With the seemingly constant changes to models and spacings and action lengths and mags and all the one-offs for certain distributors, Savage can be difficult to figure out sometimes. Fuckin Savage.

Remington is a much simpler. They got two action since Jesus was in diapers ... one short, one long. Pick one.

I agree, Savage is a lot more confusing than Remington. But I'm willing to deal with a little confusion in exchange for saving some $$.

If I am not mistaken, the rear screw only serves to hold the trigger guard, it is a short screw and should not be a big deal to drill the hole for it.

I just put my 10FCP into a B&C Varmnt Tactical. In addition to the slight fitting sometimes required to get the rear of the trigger guard to seat, and a quick 1/16" drill bit to allow the wood (rear trigger guard)screw to enter easily, you may have to clear a little material away from the area were the new bolt release slides back and forth. It may bind a little when you torque down your screws, that is why a little juducial chisel work, above the trigger guard inletting, (but out of sight when it's mounted) is required.

Since your's is the newer center feed model, if it has a detachable magazine, you'll need to order the magazine retaining clip, at minimum, direct from Savage. You can also buy a new mag box, follower and spring as well. They aren't Midway so don't look for it getting to you in two days! Also, if you have the detachable mag, the front action screw may be too short for the new stock. You'll need to order a replacement action screw, they'll sell you a set.

Keep in mind that the detachable mag can be used but you have to remove the bottom plate from it and use the Savage retaining clip to keep the rear of the mag box seated in the new stock and out of the way of the bolt's travel. I made a clip for mine that is working well enough but have parts on order from Savage anyway. The total parts cost for the mag, spring, follower, retaining clip and screws is like $30.00 clams. They'll be open tomorrow.

As long as you have the screw spacing measurement correct, the stock is a drop in fit with only minor tweakage.
