New Savage model 10 with a burr on the crown

Like the topic says, has anyone ever heard of this? Rifle is a Savage Model 10 chamber in .308. I've had this rifle for a couple weeks now and noticed this the other day. I called Savage about it and they said to take it to a gunsmith and have them backcharge Savage for the repair. The burr is a small burr, but it's enough to catch a finger nail on.
How bad would this burr effect the accuracy in your opinion? I shot it one time and had some pretty horrible groups at 50yrds and came home and checked everything. Rail was good, rings were good and scope hadn't moved. So I figured it was me or the winchester 150gr soft points I was shooting, but 3 and 4 inch groups at 50 yds is pretty bad. Heck, maybe it was a combo of all three.

I would def...take to a smith and have it recrown, like savage say they take care of it. That is a horrible group at 50yds.

Winchester super X 150gr shoots like dogshit in anything I've ever tried it in, including my Savage 10fp.

Take it to a smith and see what they say. I can catch a fingernail on the edge of the bore on mine - shoots lights out, so it may not really even be a problem.

Sounds like it could be a common issue then. That's interesting that Savage would let barrels go out with a burr on the crown. I described what I had going on to them and they made it sound like it's deffinetly not supposed to have anything you can feel around the crown. Will a smith be able to put the black back on the barrel and make it look factory? The smith said he would chuck it up in a lathe and skim it which I'm assuming would take it through the paint or powdercoat. I'm kind of hesitant to let a smith do it if it's not going to look factory afterwards.

The finish on your 10fp is black oxide. You can gave that redone, but it will cost a few bucks. More likely, the smith is going to touch it up with some kind of cold blueing compound, which is gonna look just fine, and have as much corrosion resistance as the black oxide, which is just slightly more than none.

You are going to get a free re crown out of the deal so I would'nt be to upset. In my opinion every factory rifle can benefit from this. I like the way my new crown looks better than the factory one anyway.

This is assuming one can find a competent gunsmith locally.
I know not one within 100 miles of my location that I would trust to recrown a rifle.

When surching for a smith, should one ask the smith any questions in particular to see if he's any good? I have a local smith that is supposed to be reputable, but you know how that goes. Should I ask how he plans on crowning the barrel and what way would a smith use if he's any good? I mean I've seen someone crown there barrel with a round back crew chucked up in a drill with some rubbing compound on it.

Ask them how they'll do it. The response MUST include:

Put in lathe, indicate off the bore to eliminate all runout, cut crown with a single-point tool.

No countersinks!

It doesn't matter really, what type of crown is cut - 11° target, recessed target, with/without chamfer...just so long as it's true to the bore, and symmetrical. Personally, I like Savaves recessed target crown. It shoits lights out, and I've never buggered it up over many years and thousands upon thousands of rounds.

Thanks for the info! You should probably go get that burr nocked off your crown and move from shooting lights out to tack driving. ;-)
