I bought a new 700 sps with a hogue over mold stock. The first day I got to the range it was early in the am and kind of cool and I was able to get under an inch group at 100. I took it out yesterday in the afternoon (alot hotter, about 100degrees) and the groups opened up to almost 2". I notice that the barrel is floated almost all the way, but the rubber coating on the stock rolls over the fore end and is packed around the barrel chanell quite tightly. Is the a possible reason for this problem, and what is the best solution, hog out the offending material? Or is a new stock in this rifles future, I have never used a hogue overmold (thought it was going to be good) but now am starting to question my choice. Thank you in advance for the knowlege to be gained Jeff...........

Yes it sags a bit but if you preload your bi-pod it will peel it back from the barrel enough to not touch even on a warm day. If you really like the stock, just buy the fully bedded version, it has a more rigid fore end. If you're shooting off bags keep them back near the b/m and you shouldn't have the problem. Mine shot nice and stayed nice, however my buddy had issues with his holding any sort of group, and he had random fliers and such. We were pretty confident it wasn't the shooter, and we even swapped rifles. I couldn't hold a group with it to save my life. Turned out he had a stubborn factory barrel that kept fouling out. Got through that and it's shooting nice now.

I can't roll this back it actually extends about 5/8" back up the barrel channel. I was told by a freind at Mcmillan that if I cut the offending material out of the channel that it will eventually begin to separate from the stock. So with that in mind I think I will have to start thinking about a new stock. I can't find any other reason for the groups to have opened up with no other changes to the system. I am running the same ammo, from the same lot#, bases and rings are tight, the only thing that changed was air temp, (31 degrees warmer that initial sight in). If I am off in my thinking then set me straight PLEASE, Jeff

Re: new sps tactical with hogue overmold

I was told by a Rem exec that the rubber Hogue stock at the very end of the channel was meant to touch the barrel. Not sure of the reasoning why - perhaps they felt that the rubber would dampen the barrel vibrations and make it more accurate or ?

Mine shoots pretty darn well with Remington 168 Match ammo - sub 3/4. Doesn't like any other factory load (168/175 GMM or 168/175 BHills) I had picked up the rifle to use the action for another build but for now I'm gonna handload it up REAL hot and try to see how fast I can scoot a bullet down that barrel and still be accurate.

How new is your barrel? Is your barrel fouling immediately? When I got mine I JB pasted it pretty well - a buddy of mine has one too and his fouled immediately and started shooting nasty large groups. I JB'ed his barrel and cleaned it real well and it's back to shooting sub MOA groups. I was surprised how badly the groups opened up after so few rounds.

Re: new sps tactical with hogue overmold

I took my action off and sanded down the tip of the stock about 1/8" and now it is completely freefloated.

Keep in mind the Remington rifles come from the factory with a HUGE freebore, even at MaxCOAL you'll have 1/8" or MORE of freebore. So depending on the type of ammo you use, it could make a significant difference.
