Rifle Scopes New SWFA SS 1-4 HD just arrived

Re: New SWFA SS 1-4 HD just arrived

I think I have a faulty one, but would like to know if anyone else has problems with their illuminated reticle?

I have mine mounted on a M1A and the recoil causes the reticle's illumination to stop functioning. It then takes turning the rheostat several turns to come back on. Tried tightening the battery compartment and changing the battery. No joy.

My only other issue with it is that at 1.0x objects are smaller than normal and only become "normal 1.0" size at approximately 1.25x on the indicator.

However, the MIL/MIL works great. Took me three shots to zero in. I then put five rounds in a smaller than dime size hole with a Loaded M1A and 4x at 25 yards distance(Had to use the indoor range due to rain today)

M14fan,

SWFA just announced that the issue related to that illumination interuption is due to the spring between the battery and the rheostat knob. Not enough pressure as the spring is evidently too compressed to maintain a solid contact point under recoil. If you unscrew the cap and extend/stretch the spring out a little it'll fix the problem. SWFA also told everyone that a replacement rheo knob will be sent out to everyone who purchased a SS, regardless of any reported issue.

On the other issue, have you adjusted the ocular?

I can't say the thought hasn't crossed my mind...

I put some more rounds downrange today and I'm leaning towards keeping the T-reticle. I still like the donut for quick & close stuff but for magnification above 2X and targets beyond about 75 yards I much prefer the T-reticle. Most of the shots I take with this rifle are in the 50-300 yard range so as of now the T-reticle is in the lead... barely. I'm going to shoot more either tomorrow or Monday and come to a decision.

And no, the decision won't be to keep both... even if it is a good idea.

Thanks for info Hokie! I suspected it was the battery bouncing around inside the compartment that was causing the problem, but hadn't seen anything on the subject yet. Where did you get your info about the new replacement knobs from SWFA? (Edited: I googled it and saw the SWFA response on AR15 site. Thanks again)

Concerning the ocular, I have adjusted it to be as clear as possible (car licenses at 55 yards (milled)

) and even asked my son to take a peek at the marked 1.0x power setting just in case it was my older eyes. However, he sees things as slightly smaller as well. I even asked are they larger, smaller or the same so as not to influence his response. I don't know if the ocular can affect object size or not, but it would make sense if it did. I'm not really concerned about it, but it is a minor annoyance. (Edit: Saw SWFA's response this on the AR15 site as well)

The cool thing about 1.0x is adjusting for parallax error, by lining the vertical reticle line up with the front sight post.

I really like the donut reticle for the speed, but I wish the bottom and left and right lines weren't so thick. They obstruct too much of the target. The outer ghost ring is fine. I had the same problem with the Swarovski 1x6 with the circle dot. S&B got it right with the Short Dot when they made the lines hollow. Other than that, the reticle is nearly perfect, but I don't think I'll get it because of the thick lines.

Try setting the ocular on 1X with both eyes open. Then check to see it's still OK at 4X. I found a pretty wide range of adjustment still looks fine on 4X so you can really dial in the way it looks on 1X.

Re: New SWFA SS 1-4 HD just arrived

After reading hokies excellent review i placed an order and received the scope thursday. Took it to the range saturday and left the illumination on overnight. Sunday morning saw some weirdness, the illumination would only work on 11, on all other settings it was dead. Turned the illumination off then checked it out again last night, was working fine on all settings.

Cool, also, if you start spinning the ocular and want to go back to the original setting, the distance from the objective to the factory setting on the ocular is 10.4"
