Hello everyone! Im new to long range shooting as well to sniper hide. Im going to purchase s Remington 700 5R. And wanting some input/opinions from ppl on good setups. My friend told me how good this rifle is and told me to go with a jewel trigger and nightforce scope. But im sure he will show me more "ropes" after i get the rifle. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

How much money do you plan on spending?
A quality scope, rings and bases would be a good start. And your friend is steering you right with nightforce, though you don't have to spend that much for a good quality scope.
A quality trigger like Jewell or timney is a good idea.
I would just shoot it with a good scope first to determine where you're at and how much more you need to do to get it to shoot to what you consider acceptable.
I would put aside a good chunk of money for ammo. Federal match ammo can be found for around $20/box if you look around.

You didn't pick up the keys at fifteen to begin a career in INDY. Nor can you pick up a 5R with a NF and sling the lead at 1000 with any regularity. If you can afford a 5R and NF then by all means, this will eliminate most everything that mechanically can be blamed for misses and leave you as the culprit. The whole set up is only as good as it's weakest link. Time behind the rifle is key but you must have a good understanding of how it all works. For rifle fundamentals I have no clue on Literature. Maybe some Army FM's. The Lyman reloading manual is typically regarded as the holy grail of reloading for noobs. The whole front section is a barney level break down of each and every tool and procedure and has an explanation of why and how. There is absolutely no replacement for your own dope. You'll never know until you put a round down range.

Thanks guys for the info. Yes i know its going to take an enormous anount if time to get the understanding. My friend who told me about this rifle is pretty knowledgeable about rifles as he is on the army rifle team and is a national champion at Perry. But im trying to get a broad opinion from several ppl. For what it's worth. I have 5 Millit LRS-1 scopes. I regularly shoot past 1k to a mile. I have had most of the tier 1 scopes side by side to include of course Nightforce both FFP and regular, S&B, SWAROVSKI and a Falcon menace My eyes could not see an appriciable diffrence between them, as a matter of fact the LRS-1 seemed brighter at dawn and dusk. I did have an issue with one of the LRS-1 scopes, which Millit/bushnell fixed with their lifetime warrenty. The Millit was under $500. I would also look at the Tikka Scout rifle for bang for the buck, out out of the box performance.

I own a bushnell 3-12x44 ffp scope on my 5r and both the other scopes I mentioned perform better than it, but I bought what i could afford at the time. Please don't take this man serious when he says his millet has better glass than schmidt& bender etc. Also I can assure you a Falcon Menace is not a tier one scope.

You better read my post agian, cause I never said the LRS had better glass!! I reported what I thought based on a side by side comparison. Say what you want, this is my experiance. I have no reason to lie do you? I am just telling the man what my eyes saw thought those scopes, that is why I own five of the LRS-1s. I did not see 1K+$ worth of diffrence between them. I am no expert by any means, just reporting what I went through when I was comparing scopes. Sorry if it goes against your grain!! I agree as the menace not being tier one, just ment I had it side by side to compare with the others, sorry for the confusion.

It doesn't go against my grain because I can't afford the upper scopes. What you pay the extra money for is a piece of equipment that has good glass, tracks true, and is robust. There is a video of a guy using his USO scope to hammer nails in, do that with your millet. I'm not throwing off on your millet in any way if that's what you want its fine, but don't tell someone that your millet is better than the scopes you listed with the exception of the falcon.

I have been lurking on this site for about two years, just signed up in December. I enjoy getting all the insight and information here, just have not had anything I felt was worth adding to the conversation, until now.
I have a Millet that I put on my TRG-22 after running out of money purchasing the rifle, a Near Base and Alpha-mount, and Terje's stock mods. I used it like that for about a year and a half. It has pretty clear glass and seemed to track okay. The only problem with it is the turrets (in .1 Mils) don't seem to be calibrated properly. Every program I ran (JBM, Shooter, Strelok) indicated that with my load on a given day I should be at 4.4 Mils at 600 yards, yet it took 5.2 on the Millet. It preformed fine once I put 5.2 Mils on it, but that didn't seem right to me. It was even further off when I went past 600 yards. The farthest I have shot with the Millet was just over 800 yards and it was even more problematic for me at that range.
I finally squirreled away enough to upgrade and picked up a NF NXS 5.5-22X50 MLR from Euro Optic (Great service by the way, Thanks Alex) and have noticed quite a difference in the scopes. The glass seems to me to be much sharper, and the turrets (also in .1 Mils) are in agreement with all the programs. It also seems to be built like a tank.
I still have the Millet and will probably mount it on something else, but I am a NightForce customer for life now. Getting the Millet allowed me to shoot the rifle much sooner than waiting until I could afford something else, but after having and using both I can see that there really is a significant difference between them.

As for the LRS-1 tracking, I don't use mine based on any program, sure the program gets you in the ball park but true dope is true dope based on your rifle, the ammo and the scope. I dial dope based on those factors, once I have the dope, allo of my LRS-1s have been spot on dialing up and down to a mile without a hitch on my 338 Lapua. It does the same on my AR 15 out to 750yards and on my Tikka 308 out to 1139yards. I am talking up and down from 100 to a mile in the following incraments. 100, 200, 300, 410, 550, 650, 750, 875, 1139 and a mile, that is how I have steel set up where I shoot. Once I am doped, I can pick any target click up an down and be spot on and shoot lites out! To this point I see no need to spend another 1k or in my case 5k to outfit my rifles with any other scopes. When I do reach that point it will have to be something other then those I mentioned because as I said, "MY EYES" did not see a huge diffrence.

I bought my bushnell tactical ffp scope on sale because it fit my budget. If I had the money I would have gone with a nightforce. My buddies have a few different ones and I love them. My eyes can tell a difference just like when I shot with another guys premier scope at a long range shoot. That's the only point i'm trying to get accross. To the Op I appologize for getting off topic. For the gun the 5r is a great starting place I really enjoy shooting mine. Get a good base and set of rings. For scope if your budget allows I would go with a nightforce 3-15x50 mil/mlr or if your a moa guy the np-r1 reticle and enjoy the sport.

Yeah im going with nf for sure after talking to my buddy lastnight. Ill prob.go with 5.5x22x50 though. Not sure sbout moa or mil though. He said moa is easier to understand but once you learn mil.its more precise.
