I'm getting into reloading for my .223. I have a bolt action savage with 20" barrel and a single shot h&r with 22" barrel. both with 1:9 twist. Both absolutely love 70+gr rounds. First question is would I gain anything by using nickel cases instead of regular brass? And my big question is whats the best way to get at least close to subsonic for the savage? Ideally i would like to be able to shoot a squirrel or rabbit if coyote hunting isnt going well. Any advise would be greatly appreciated guys! Great forum by the way!

I believe the only thing nickel has going for it is that it doesn't dirty up as fast as brass. Other than that, I dont think it has anything over the norm.
As to the second part of your question, subsonic .223 is certainly possible to reload. But you would be better off shooting a .22, its alot cheaper. And if you are just getting into reloading, I think it would be a dangerous attempt, for it is not a subject for a beginner. Stick around here, and keep reading, you will learn what you need to know.

Subsonic with jacketed bullets is a dicey game. Stick a bullet and it really sucks. If you want subsonic...go cast lead bullets. About 1.5 to 2 grains of Bullseye will do you good. The advice on a .22 rimfire is good. A .22 RF with CB caps is almost silent. Nickeled brass is easy to find in the woods. Otherwise...forget it. 70 grain bullets probably won't work in the subsonic loads. Way too long for stability. Google the Greenhill's formula. Find out your barrel twist and work from there. JMHO
