There is much to be said for sane glass mounted low and ruggedly,in conjunction with fixed furniture. I'll greedily take a comb shim, over doodads or knick-knacks.

Re: New to the longrange shooting ................

well, 300 meters with the M4 isnt hard for me with iron sights, but again thats iron sights, any suggestions for me, ill start slow, zero get used to the rifle and etc but any real key pointers that could make it easier on me even in the begining stages,

flyboy, i understand completely what you mean, and ill take that in to deep consideration before i begin to even shoot past 300 with it (no sarcasm intended)

Re: New to the longrange shooting ................

Funny seeing Nobody still mentioned -wow what impact he had on many I hope is allowed back at some stage but takes antidepresant's to calm him down as he has a shit load of good knowledge

Re: New to the longrange shooting ................

Factory barrels and premium barrels vary, and interior bore finish is one of the primary differences.

However you approach the issue, by the time a few hundred rounds are down the bore, I doubt anyone here could determine whether a break-in process was employed.

I also doubt there are many here who are more jealous of bore/throat life than I am. While I certainly don't shoot as much as I'd like, the truth is, I have yet to wear out a barrel AFAIK.

The main reason being that unless I'm developing or confirming a load, or shooting 'for real', as in shooting a match or harvesting game, my primary rifle stays cased and my shooting gets done with a .22LR.

This is not rocket surgery. Save the bore life for when it counts, and it will probably never matter whether you employed a deliberate break-in technique or not.

Me, I like to do a deliberate break-in with a factory barrel, mostly because I'm kinda anal about cleaning, and also because I like to see how the copper deposition process is coming along.

This process of observation has demonstrated to me that factory barrels take awhile before the copper deposition tapers down to a reasonable level, and that for premium barrels, copper deposition is so slight that break-in is pretty much a complete waste of time.

The main thing about bore life and shooting is that every round deserves reasonable care concerning intention and accuracy. Never 'waste' a round down the primary's bore.

100 rounds of match .22LR downrange this week.

0 rounds of match .308

Getting to the point that I don't want to burn .308 under 200 yards.
