Looking for input

700 Remington 308
McMillan A3.5
20" Barrel
Vais Break
20 Degree Badger Base

Shooting will be done at various distance and light conditions

5.5 x 22 x (((question))) 50 or 56mm

They are the same price and was looking for input as to pros and cons. I am now leaning towards the 50 instead of the 56 for a couple of reasons.
#1 Its in stock.

#2 If I ever swap rifles and do not have a 20 Degree base the 50 should go right on vs. the 56 would probably need another base.

Am I off base of missing any other factors

Any Help is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Bruce

Re: NF question on OBJ size, help me choose

The 20 MOA base will put the objective closer to the barrel on either optic. So unless you have a change to a different contour barrel or change to a 45 MOA base I doubt there will be a problem.

The 56 may require higher rings and change your cheek weld. If you have an adjustable cheek piece then not a problem but if not then it is something to consider.

I have both of those Nightforces and I put them side by side and focused on a spec of rust on a pipe 200 yards away during oncoming dusk. The ability to see the rust went away at the same time with both scopes. I couldn't tell the difference.

depending on your barrel contour, they mount the same, with a 20 moa pic rail you can still use .885 rings, there is a 10% difference in light transmission with the two scopes, i would go 56mm. i also have both in stock.

I am currently running the 50mm obj in a similar configuration (MCMillan A3, Badger 20moa base). I have the Vortex low rings .87 I believe, and there is not enough clearance between the bell and the barrel for the NF bikini cap to seat fully on the objective, however cheek weld is good without having to make use of the adjustable cheek piece. If you were to go with the 56mm objective, you would probably need at least 1" tall rings based on what i have seen in my configuration.

Re: NF question on OBJ size, help me choose

You've been given quite a bit of good info. You might also consider how you will actually be using the glass. At higher power settings the field of view is reduced and subsequently less light transmission, so if you believe you will be using the higher range most often, then perhaps the larger objective might make sense. Also, the overall conditions you are shooting in would be important. If you will be shooting mostly in low light or night then the larger objective would rate. I have that model in the 56mm objective on a target rifle and it's a quality optic. On the other hand, it's big and bulky and I do not prefer it over the 50mm (and actually 42mm) for field use.

Wow, all great info and I thank you all....I called the guy I have had it on order and paid a while now and he swapped it over to the 50mm for me and I should have it soon

Thanks again

Jay I will keep you in mind for my next purchase for sure. Thanks
