I have a question for you guys. If you remove a scope from the base of a rifle, but dont take the scope out of the rings, do you need to re-level the scope when you go to re-mount it on the same base or no? I know you mount your scope after the base is secured, then lock the scope in the rings.
Reason I ask is, Im having some work done to my rifle, and the scope had to come off.

Re: NF Scope

If you put it back in the same rails as you took it out of you should be fine. You may have to slightly adjust your zero. One thing to do next time is get yourself a whit paint marker and put witness marks on the rail and the scope mount so if it comes off you know exactly where it goes again when you put it back on. I also put a little dot on each bolt on the rings so I can see if theres ever any movement and I need to retighten.

Thats what mine looks like and I've taken it off before and put it back on. It returned to zero with only a slight adjustment. Hope that helps

Re: NF Scope

I agree with camocorvette. I have removed and replaced several times and had miner zero adjustments. I the gunsmith removes the pic rail to perform the work I would probrably check the level just for piece of mind.

Re: NF Scope

I've had mine off several times and haven't had problems...as long as the base hasn't been messed with..I think you'll be fine. I also use the same torque wrench ( Seekonk 65 in./lb ) when tightening the rings to the base.

I tighten the rings on the scope first, and then torque the rings to the base.
I've never seen over a one or 2 click difference when putting the scope back onto the base.

Re: NF Scope

I never had a problem. I have a scope on my AR15 and take it on and off all the time to put a red dot on. I never lost zero once. Im using the Leupold cantilever mount that cost about $100. It is possible to lose zero especially with really cheap mounts. Just like the other guys said try to put it right back in the same position and tighten the same amount.
