I was thinking about buying a .223 Rem700 SPS Tactical in .223 to keep my .308 version company (already have an extra PSS stock) but ran across a local store selling one of the above-mentioned Savages and can get it today for $540 + tx. It's one of the new ones, 4.4" screw spacing, accutrigger, detachable mag., mag release up front, and plastic stock, which seems the only problem since no one is making decent stocks for this setup yet (matter of time). I haven't researched the optimum barrel length but I guess the 26" can always be shortened.

Can anyone tell me how this compares to the SPS Tac in .223, which also comes with a crap stock?

Also, if shooting out to 600-800y, what barrel length would be optimal in .223? Unfortunately, I don't know twist rates.

Thanks in advance!

Without knowing the twist its hard to say. If 1in12 you should be able to shoot at least a 60 grainer but would nice to have a 1in8 and run the 75s or 80s. Sounds like a good price though.

Searching the Savage site it seems their HB .223s are 1 in 9".

I found conflicting info. on the Rem 700 SPS Tacticals; older ones with 1 in12", and newer ones with 1 in 9".

I can't find the particular Savage on their site, so it may be store specific. It does not come with the large bolt knob; just the regular.
