I'm looking at getting a setup with some night vision and wondering (especially from military folks) what is the best setup to have. It would mostly be used on a long range sniper system. It would be nice to be able to use if for night time recon as well.

Re: Night Vision Setup (most versatile)

PVS-27 if long range is the primary use. It is actually rated for use from 3X to 20X magnification, and was quite impressive with both the 15X of my 50mm NSX as well as the 17X of my 44mm SN-3.

I have the PVS-22 which a good compromise for a unit that sees use on 5.56mm ARs with variable scopes/ACOGs as well as .223 & .308 bolt actions with variable scopes. It is rated for use with 1X to 12X magnifications.

Call Victor @ TNVC.com, but first check out his site for an incredible wealth of information.

I too use a helmet mounted PVS-14 & IWAL2 IR laser, extremely effective out past 100 meters, but for a 300WM I would think you would at the very least want a 6X scope like my D-760 GenIII from Victor.

Re: Night Vision Setup (most versatile)

There is also the PVS-26 for the same cost or close to the 27.

A PVS-14 works great with a AN/PEQ-2 or 15 or the Attila (SP) Vital series.

It depends on the system you plan to place it on and how you plan to use it!

I was consistently hitting 300 meter E-types with a PEQ2 that wasn't zeroed and
PVS-14.

The other benefits of the PEQ-2 is that if others in your group have NVG-s it works as a target designator or IR flood light.

Just some things to ponder over.

Re: Night Vision Setup (most versatile)

Just as an FYI, the best tool for finding game and hunting at night is with a thermal setup. Once you find them with the Thermal, you dont need night vision. A hand held Thermal optic costs about as much as the 6X night vision, and their have been times when I have targets on the FLIR that were not visible with the night vision.

With Gen 3 night vision, you will look for game. With Thermal, you will automatically know if anything is within range.

I have both so if you want a no BS opinion and real world experience, let me know

Re: Night Vision Setup (most versatile)

What is the main difference between the pvs-22 and pvs-27? Just the magnification rating for optimal use, the 27 gathering more light enabling higher magnification? Also, that more light gathering allow better resolution at lower mag compared to the 22?

Re: Night Vision Setup (most versatile)

I run a PVS 27 in front of my S&B 5-25 and it works great. I agree thermal is best but pricey. I can consistently hit targets at 700yds plus on only a star-lite night.

Re: Night Vision Setup (most versatile)

I can totally see where you are coming with that. Thermal hand-held for spotting game would be far superior. 'especially' in the wooded/brush/high grass area. over the NV with the IR supplement.
I have pvs14, 6x weapons mount and IR supplements . When it comes to the dark areas, wooded/brush/high grass area cover & with area's with no ambient light coming in . I am ' Totally Reliant ' on panning the IR supplement to get eyes popping out, for any game targets hidden from the NV view. Thermal, I want and it will be mine in future time. It is so on a totally upper level playing field of performance .

( Most Versatile ) there is hardly no way around it. for all around use you need a PVS14 on the head, for personal mobility of Yourself and Gear to observation spots and general night time running & also for close range and out with a IR laser. (IMHO) you need to start/ Purchase, the PVS14 and then build off that in either direction of NV or Thermal past that.
After getting the pvs14 on the head/helmet . If you are mind set on the .300wm ? To do that Cal. any long-range justice. You need a 460 body 6x gen.3 -or- in-front of the Obj. PVS models . Thermal is icing on the cake either way you go, either hand-held or on top the .300wm .
.

Best post on this thread for those with questions. I spent time on this site (TNVC) today and educated myself on the differences in the quality NV units. Give it a look.
