How much recoil can a NightForce BR scope take? I am building a 338/408 and would like to save a few bucks and get the 12-42 BR but don't know if it can stand up to the recoil. Of course the gun will have a brake on it. Anybody every put one of these on a heavy recoiling rifle? How did they stand up?

Thanks,

Re: Nightforce BR scopes

You should worry more about the lack of elevation in the BR scopes for an ELR rifle than the recoil. Look at the 5.5-22x. 100 MOA of travel and enough magnification to see out as far as the rifle will shoot.

Re: Nightforce BR scopes

Very good point. I didn't even think of that... Man! I guess with a 30 MOA base I would still have a good bit of travel to shoot for a while but I can see where i would want more MOA.

Re: Nightforce BR scopes

The 12-40 only has 40 MOA of total travel. With a 20 MOA and perfectly centered windage you would have 40 MOA. Same with a 30 MOA. Bottom is bottom.

Wouldn't the NXS have enough elevation? the 338 at 1000yds is low 137" and one moa at that distance is approx 10" and it has up to 45moa of elevation so like 22.5 up and 22.5 down and that would give you about 225" of downward elevation adjustment {assuming perfectly centered for windage} and thats not even including a 20moa base. Read the article above for more info on the 338, that is where I got my figures.

Re: Nightforce BR scopes

Looks like you are right:

NXS 8-32x56 - 65 MOA
NXS 12-42x56 - 45 MOA

BR 8-32x56 - 50 MOA
BR 12-42x56 - 40 MOA

Looks like I am back the the original question. Will the BR hold up to the recoil? I will be using a 30 MOA base.

Re: Nightforce BR scopes

Yes it should. I know the NXS is designed to be more durable, but that dosnt mean that the BR models arent. I believe there is a clip on youtube from SHOT explaining the diffrences. But im my opinion Yes it will hold up, Nightforce scopes are very very reliable.

Re: Nightforce BR scopes

Thanks for the info. I watched the you tube video you mentioned and it was very helpful. Seems like the BR would do the trick. I might have to give it a shot. With a lifetime warranty why not...
