Looking to buy a new scope for M40 rifle. Ive got it narrowed down to 2, a nightforce or schmidt and bender. I know S&B has the reputation for being one of the finest scopes on the market but is it worth $1200 more than a nightforce.

Re: Nightforce or Schmidt & Bender

Apples and oranges. The Nightforce that would be $1200 less than a S&B would be the SFP models where the S&B is FFP.

If you compare the FFP ro FFP then the price difference is about $600.

As to which is best for you, well that's something only you can decide. Pick the scope that has the features you want or need.

Re: Nightforce or Schmidt & Bender

I would also tell you to spend some time looking at the reticles and decide on what you want - FFP versus SFP; MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA and what reticle you find to be the easiest to work with. When I first started buying optics I never took that into consideration and bought all kinds of non-compatible stuff. I have since made more of an attempt to determine what it is that I like and can use comfortably.

Only you can determine if certain optics are worth the extra $600 or $1200 that you will spend because everyone has a little difference in their eyes and what you see in one optic and not be exactly what others will see. I think pretty much anyone will tell you that the S&B has better clarity than a NF but it really comes down to what are you going to use it for and is that difference in clarity going to make much of a difference.

Six hundred dollars can buy lots of ammo if you are only go to the range and shoot a couple of hundred yards.

mildot recticle is all I've ever shot but somtimes things tend to get a little clustered for me, so I'm looking @ getting an MLR recticle with finer lines to help. Thanks for the input

ignore this its coming from a guy with very little experience behind either one. all the other guys have shot thousands of rounds through both. I don't know anyone that can afford a s&b that would buy a nxs instead.

Re: Nightforce or Schmidt & Bender

I would say S&B unless you go with the Nightforce F1. The glass on the F1 is much better to my eyes than the SFP scopes.I only have looked through 1 F1 scope (mine) so Im not sure what others think but I have no problem with the glass on the NXS.There might be a slight bit of difference in the image on the outer edge verses the S&B but its sure not a deal breaker to me.In the end look at the features you need and want, but both are great scopes.

Well, then, in that case...allow me to introduce myself. I have owned two NXS 22x scopes and now own my third; not because I couldn't afford an S&B.

I don't dispute the fact that S&B makes 'badass glass' but unless you're a competition shooter, like to have bragging rights, make extended long range shots on a regular basis, or have money that you really don't know what else to do with...the NightForce will serve you well.

I considered the purchase of an S&B when I purchased my POF but after considering what I'd be using it for (range and hunting), I didn't see the return on my investment.

It all comes down to this — what are you going to be using it for? Only you can determine what you really 'need' and if it's worth the extra cash investment.

Re: Nightforce or Schmidt & Bender

I switched to NF from USO because even though the nightforce is basic it has all the necessary features. Something about having a scope that is a simple rugged tool appealed to me. I would love to have a S&B but i couldn't bring myself to justify the extra cost. The glass is definetly better in the S&B but besides that i couldn't really see an advantage. The double turn knobs on the S&B are nice but now with the HS turrets on the NF i don't feel like im missing anything. Zero stops are nice too.

Re: Nightforce or Schmidt & Bender

Thanks for the replys guys but its a done deal, just bought the NF 5.5-22x 56 zero stop 1/10 mil adj. MLR recticle....

Re: Nightforce or Schmidt & Bender

actually got to look through the same scope back in the summer from a co worker of my dads. so i've had an interest in this scope for a while. He loves his but i thought I'd get a few comments on the S&B before i bought

Re: Nightforce or Schmidt & Bender

As with many choices, it's a very personal preference. I have both and can honestly say that on most days I can not tell that much of a difference until I get to extremes, such as dimmer lighting and much longer distance. Consider how you will do most of your shooting and make a move. I don't think you will be disappointed with either.
