I am looking at purchasing a Nikon Monarch 5x-20x (sf) with a 44mm obj (nikoplex). The price is 340.00 and it is new. It looks like a deal. Going to use the scope for all around use on a .308 700. Does anyone have any experience with this scope? One shooter told me he does not think it is a true 20x, which is really no big deal. Also, I have "heard" that they have issues keeping the windage adjustment when elevation turret is wheeled up or down. Any other pros or cons would be of help even if they are considered by some to be isolated production faults.

Re: Nikon Monarch scope questions

I was looking closely at a couple of Nikon Monarch scopes earlier this year and ended up going with a Leupold VarX III 6.5x20 (which I got for reasonable price but was still several hundred more than the Nikons) due to slightly better apparent resolution (reading road signs several times at a distance - not very definitive but the best I could do at this store ;-) on the four Nikon's I checked.

Besides the slight resolution differences some of the Monarch's have limited vertical adjustment range (only a factor as one goes past 600 yards and/or gets an angled base) and the mil dot versions had thick cross hairs at the center (great for low light or fast moving game but thicker than I like).

Re: Nikon Monarch scope questions

The limited adjustment travel is a concern. I use a 20 moa base and TPS rings at this time so I hope that would help. I plan on getting out to 600 and occasionally 800 just for fun. The glass seems clear and the nikoplex reticle was fine enough for long distance shooting and functional for hunting. I had a VX III several years ago but thought the price on this Monarch may be worth the attempt. Thanks for the reply. I will continue to see if any others post conerns but for now the price seems gtg for what I am looking for.
