Rifle Scopes Nikon monarch

Re: Nikon monarch

I just sold a Premier Reticle 5-25MRAD,and a Nightforce NSX all MOA, with that money I'm buying 2 Vortex Razors with EBR3 reticles, I see you can get discount on Nikons, well so fucking what, it's cheaper in the long run to buy once, cry once, if you buy a Nikon you'll end replacing it with something better, something with matching reticle/knobs, how much money did you save, none. As for BDC they seem like a good idea on paper, in the real world of long range shooting nobody uses them, reason being they simply don't work, and once you educate yourself on ballistics, you can use the MilDots the same way but be really accurate.

Re: Nikon monarch

And complete your profile, somebody lives close to you and would be willing to help you out, I knew nothing when I joined Snipershide, Uncle Sam taught me to fix airplanes, which I still do, and I learned a lot from members close to me.

Re: Nikon monarch

If you are just using the rifle for hunting at short range it might serve your needs. If it is long range capability you seek then leave the Nikon at Dick's.
Please search thru this section and you will find much knowledge on scopes of all price ranges and what you can expect from them.

Re: Nikon monarch

No sorry, im new to the world of guns I'm 15 and although young I've been working hard to get exactly what i want and learn new things everyday. I like to think I'm a good shot i can post 100 yard targets if anyone would like to see

Re: Nikon monarch

Even with your buddies 25% off at dicks you will be better served getting something off the classifieds or ordering online.

1) you will end up with quality equipment, dicks sells cheap shit
2) the markup at dicks is high, even with your buddy getting 25% off, it can be had cheaper
3) no sales tax

Re: Nikon monarch

For a hunting scope that Nikon would be hard to beat, especially if you can catch when Dick's puts it on sale for $199. I had one and the glass was pretty decent for the money.

Re: Nikon monarch

I had a Nikon Monarch 3-12x42SF on my .308 for a while for hunting and it was good.

I sold it and went with a Viper PST 4-16 FFP MRAD, only because I can still use that for hunting and I can shoot longer ranges with it due to the features of the scope.

If you're only going to hunt with it, the Monarch will serve you well.

Re: Nikon monarch

If you are 15 years old and the max distance you can shoot at is 250 yds. That nikon will be just fine for you on a 308. My guess is that most of your shooting/Hunting is gonna be more in the 100 yard range.

I would think at your age, there are some other priorities that you are thinking about when it comes to spending your money. first thing I can think of is a Car/truck.

Get the Nikon (i would get the 4x12) Go shoot it and have fun. In a year or 2 you can save up some money and get something better if you think you need it. By then you will be able to drive and may be able to get to a range that offers more distance than 250 yds. If your shooting past that you will want to step up to a better scope, maybe a Loupold or a Vortex. jmo.

Re: Nikon monarch

We all have to start somewhere and I applaud you for asking good question's. There's alway's a budget and I see you trying to get the most for your money, smart move. Since I do some freelance work for Nikon I'll tell you about a BDC special that is going on right now and you can save $30 on a Nikon BDC reticle scope. That 3-9 you liked at Dick's will probably serve your need's just fine, if you can, maybe the PROSTAFF 4-12 would do so even better. If you do go with the BDC reticle I encourage you to check out Nikon's Spot On Ballistic Program to really dial your rifle, scope and ammo in for even more accuracy.
427, I hate to tell you this, but the BDC Reticle really does work and with Spot On I have his 4 in jar's of Tannerite at 600 yards. I don't know if you've ever tried it out or not, but the proof is in the results. From one N. Tx boy to another. I'm also pretty sure if it didn't work, we wouldn't have over 1 million registered user's on the FREE site.
They can't all be wrong....

Young man, keep shooting and asking question's, good luck and be safe.

Re: Nikon monarch

I've been shooting Nikons for a long time and have been happy with them. My first scope was a 3-9x40 (pre-monarch) I bought when I was some where around your age, maybe even a little younger. I have several Monarchs now and they're all on rifles that are primarily hunting rifles. I have a .264 win mag and a .308 that both wear monarchs. While they're hunting rifles for me first, they were both purchased with the intent of using them for long range target type rifles as well. The .264 was purchased with long range hunting in mind too. When I put the monarchs on both of these rifles, I understood that I would probably be upgrading them eventually, but felt these were good enough scopes that I wouldn't be held back until I wanted to upgrade.

My old 3-9 served me very well until I wanted to start shooting prairie dogs at over 300 yards. My eyes are bad enough that I had a hard time seeing them with 9x so I bought a scope with a more powerful magnification range. I was into the 3-9 for a small enough amount of cash that I didn't sweat it.
