They will not fit in my rifle. I have the 175gr in 308. My RCBS die will not make them short enough to fit. I think 2.64 is the length it would have to be to fit, but that seems really short. I have sierra' that are over 2.80 that fit fine. I guess I have to get rid of them unless anyone else has any ideas. Is this a common problem?

Re: Nosler Custom Competition Problem

They run interchangeably with other 175/178 grain bullets by other manufacturers in mine, several rifles in fact. I load them exactly the same way as I do my 175 SMK loads.

Your saying the loaded rounds will chamber when the OAL is 2.64"? What is the actual diameter of the bullets? Is your chamber packed with carbon? Barring an obstruction, the only thing that comes to mind is an anomaly with the bullet.

Re: Nosler Custom Competition Problem

What queequeg said....something seems amiss here. I have never had such an issue, and I shoot a load of the CC's, in all weights. Standard seating depth (use same seating die for all weights) and just vary powder and/or powder chaarge without issues. I really wonder if somehow you have an odd sized bullet that you managed to get into your cases, or if maybe you have some other odd thing going on.

I have a good friend that had inadvertently adjusted his die such that the crimping ring was just slightly engaged, and this caused the case to swell at the neck enough that the rounds wouldn't chamber--unless you have a different die or adjusted it a good bit from your other rounds that seems unlikely though....be curious to see what you figure out....
Good luck

Re: Nosler Custom Competition Problem

The nosler rounds fit in my Rem 5R but will not fit in either of my custom rem 700s. The bolt will almost close but not all the way and it is hard as shit to pull it back out. You can see where the bullet is making contact

Re: Nosler Custom Competition Problem

I load all my 175 SMK, 175 Noslers, and 178 AMAX to about the same length - COAL 2.810 and they are interchangable as others have said...something is wrong here. Seems at 2.64 you would hear a lot of crunching in the powder.

Re: Nosler Custom Competition Problem

My 175 SMK are at 2.840. I don't know if the noslers are a little larger or what. measure the same with my calipers. I just ordered 1000 SMK's so I will sell my noslers

Re: Nosler Custom Competition Problem

I load mine at 2.815 in a factory 5r milspec and have never had any issues. What I have ran across using new brass was the outside of the necks had to be really chamfered a lot or the case was tight (some would not close) as you described. The same round would chamber in a different gun. Might be worth your while to really work the outside of the neck and give it a try, it solved my problems!

There is a thought Jaym! Are you trimming your cases? If so, are you chamfering them?
Are you crimping your rounds?
How many rounds since last cleaning your barrel?
Any chance that there is a bulge in your case that is causing the resistance in chambering and extracting?

I think you need to rule out all the other variables, especially since you mic'd the bullets and found them to be in spec. I can see the possibility of them needing to be at a different length in a custom chamber due to subtle differences in ogive profile but not that short. Something else is amiss here as my experience using them interchangeably with SMKs (of equal weight)is very common to most reloaders.

Good luck.

Re: Nosler Custom Competition Problem

I load my Nosler 175 CC's @ 2.785" in a Palma throated 308 Win. They work fine. I load them to 2.815" in my Remington factory 40X. Work fine at that length too.

Something's going on.

Re: Nosler Custom Competition Problem

My chamber was cut with a PTG 118LR reamer. My rifle has been cleaned and has less than 100 rounds ever put through it. I sold all my nosler CC's and bought 1000 SMK's so hopefully these will fit. I tried both winchester and federal brass on the noslers and nothing helped.

Ah shit, don't be so hard on yourself. We all make mistakes..some of us on a regular basis-just ask my wife.
