I am on the fence on a new A2 covert. I have the A1 in 308 which is now in 223SAC. And I am absolutely loving this set up. Mark has done such a great job. This thing is a laser with just about every thing I have put through it. I have not shot a group over an inch yet and that is with 55 to 90 bullets from PPU to Winchester Match.
I would be setting up the covert in 308.

I had a gen 1 SRS with 308 and 6.5 barrels. Reluctantly I sold it a while back. I really like the SRS but for me the Covert feels and handles better. My buddy is bringing his Gen 1 SRS to the range with us today so we can shoot them side by side. He is strongly considering getting the A2 Covert. I’ll report back after shooting today.

On the A2, it is apparently extremely easy to swap hand guards (May be on the A1 too), so you can go from normal length to covert pretty quickly. Of course, you need to choose an appropriate barrel length. I’ve only ever used the non-covert length handguard and Barrels. But suppressors arent legal in my state. That would affect the calculus.

Quick if you are in the shop and have the tools, but it is not something you switch in the field on the A1. With that said, I see no need for the extra rail space outside of NV use. Covert handguard + 26" .300WM barrel looks sexy. Fight me if you disagree.

I am impressed with how clean the A2s look.

Took the A2 for its maiden voyage this morning. Was on a time table so didn't get any pics or shoot to many rounds. Used M118LR, 2 rounds to zero scope then next three where half minute. Then cleaned barrel and shot a five round group that was just over half MOA. Buddy fired a five rounds of Hornady Superformance 168 ELD-M in one ragged hole. Will get it out to longer distance this weekend.

I am super impressed with the Covert A2, the balance and feel is great! My buddy is going to order a chassis up for himself!

Worth every penny. If you’re shooting the 6.5 SAUM or PRC you need this mod from Short Action Customs. They requested my magazine so they could install the kit, so I sent it to them. Just got it this morning and cycled some rounds and it’s works great!!

Feeding was the biggest issue with the 6.5 SAUM in the DT platform; now that’s been fixed.

Any questions, let me know.

After I went on the SAC website and bought the magazine modification kit, I expected the parts to show up at my house. Then I got an email from Mark asking me to send him my magazine so they could install it. It’s a free service they provide. I think they had my magazine for a day or two before I was emailed a Fedex tracking number, so the turn around time is pretty quick. Like I said, it’s really a simple but very effective magazine modification. Worth it!!

I wanted to take the SAUM out hunting this November but opted for the 300 WM only because of the feeding reliability. That’s no longer a concern.

So the mag will continue to work with normal short action rounds like 308 and 6.5cm after the modification?

When you go 6.5 SAUM you need to use a dedicated magazine. I think this modification can be done to either a short action or the long action magazine; I had them modify a short action magazine because that what I was using for my 6.5 SAUM already.

If you opt to use the short action magazine for SAC's kit, then NO, this modification will not allow you you to use a 308 based/.473 case diameter bullet; the bullet just sits on the follower because I have modified the feed lips to accept the fatter .535 casehead of the SAUM. But thats ok, since I had already sacrificed a magazine and modified the feed lips.

If you opt to use the long action magazine for the SAUM, then adding SAC's kit to the long action magazine makes the 300 WM length cartridge is too long to fit in the long action magazine. I tried a 7MM Rem Mag bullet that I had lying around and it was also too long; the shoulder of the case hits the magazine shoulder.

Keep in mind Short Action Customs magazine modification kit was designed around improving the operation of the 6.5 SAUM or 6.5 PRC. However, I just tried a 300 WSM with a 230 Berger bullet and it fits and feeds great out of my short action magazine with SAC's magazine modification with plenty of room to spare for longer seating. So this modification should improve the feeding of a 7 WSM, 7 SAUM, 300 SAUM, 300 WSM, 6.5-300 WSM, 338 WSM, etc.

I am running Varget 23.8 to 24.4
I haven't tried Varget for my SAC 223 yet, but I just picked some up. I was getting really good results with VVN140, so I just kept using that. I'll have to give the Varget a try, especially since it's considerably cheaper.

Thanks for sharing your load development data!

My two. The A2 is an absolute laser with the stock 6.5 barrel and factory Hornady 143 ELDX.

Got a great deal on the HTI from a seller here and finally just got the correct Scope mount and an ammo can of 375 Cheytac to shoot. Taking it out for the first time this week! 50BMG conversion and a bunch of 750 AMAXes come on Tuesday.

On Franks HTI video: I’ve never torqued down a barrel without first closing the bolt to headspace it. Is this an HTI thing or what? Obviously didn’t seem to affect accuracy, I just noticed the order of barrel change was different.

it was b-roll, I wanted to match the cadence of the explanation to action, it was faked for lack of a better term,

It was not a barrel change video, it was added at the very end to make a more rounded video showing it.

It doesn't matter,

Another news flash, the hits aren't sync'd the TOF flight is wrong except where you hear it in the background, so you can't match the hits and the shots are probably not the same. I film everything, take the best and pair them up. It's called editing, just like when Tony Stark says, I am Iron Man and Snaps his fingers. Done after the fact,

Head spacing is done by the bolt and the barrel. The bolt is not locking in the frame so that wont affect head spacing. You take the bolt and barrel out snd with head space gages check it.

Always close the bolt also but DT says it doesn’t matter. It’s just the way I’ve done it for the past 5yrs so it feels right to me.

Mine’s always been very repeatable either way. Super happy with DT’s systems.

Single shot adapter for your .223 conversion? Sure, I can do that. Same as before. I'll give out the STL for free or if you dont have a printer, I can make you one for cheap.

Ive got one for my creed (2 actually - a full length and shorter). Work great!

What do you charge for them? I will need two one for 223 and the other for308

Spoke with Keith @ Phoenix Custom Rifles this afternoon. He customizes each one based on any design/size and will custom fit them to the specific bolt when you send it to him. He's going to make 2 for me for a total of $70
Just got my bolt knobs back from Keith @ Phoenix Custom Rifles and they look awesome! This one is on my HTI 50

These are great- I have one of your early ones without the extended feed lip/ramp at the tip. This adapter stays in my chassis more than an actual magazine does.

I would be interested in 2 of these for 308 sizes if you are making a batch.

Glad you like it. This new one is for the SAC 223 kit only. Because the extension is different, it took some significant trial and error to get it just right. The original design still handles all other calibers.

Send me a message and I can get some more cranked out.

Glad you like it! It isnt pretty but it works like a champ.
