Speaking of 'ludicrous' execution methods, the one that I believe still takes the cake for it's ability to inflict terror, demoralization, suffering, and utter hopelessness on the victim would be when Montresor walled up Fortunato alive inside the catacomb niche in The Cask of Amontillado.
