hey guys, i just got a complete donor rifle(rem 700, 308) for my 6.5x47 build. I got it home and was looking at it, and its serial number is 74XX, so obviously it's an older one. It has a different kind of safety(block instead of round)

I guess my main concern is before i send it off to get trued up, restocked and re barreled is to make sure that I wasn't ruining something of value.

I was told to check with you guys, cause you're the experts.
thanks again, jon

Re: Old Rem 700 action question.

you might be able to get more money for it than you paid, from someone who is looking to do a period correct m40 build. Is it clip slotted, does it have the side mounted screws?

Re: Old Rem 700 action question.

I believe the receiver is square cut, there is a cut out for sure, but i don't think it has the right notches in it for a stripper clip. It's hard to tell for sure because it has an old redfield 1 piece scope base on it that two screws are stuck in it. i don't want to get very aggressive till i figure out what's up.

there are two screws on the left side of the action above the trigger if that is what you were referring with side mounted screws. i'm assuming that's what they are because my other newer rem 700's do not have those.

thanks for the post

Re: Old Rem 700 action question.

It is a first yr 700 (1962) with the 4 digit #. Not correct for an M40 or M40A1 build! However nice actions. If you decide to sell the trigger group or Redfield base or the stock I am interested.

Depending on if it is a carbine (20") barrel or condition is excellent it may well be a collector. HTH

Respectfully,
Dennis

Re: Old Rem 700 action question.

it is the carbine i believe. it does have a 20" barrel with open sights. factory bluing is in really good condition, stock has a lot of shallow scratches on the left side, but nothing really deep.

hmmmm. i still have not decided what to do with this thing.
