Olympic Arms?

Re: Olympic Arms?

There seem to be a lot of Oly haters that are going to tell you that you need a Spikes or LMT or whatever. I personally would chose something different for an average plinker (or build my own for much less money), but I would not hesitate to consider an Oly for a hunting caliber.

Go on over to OA2.org and ask the same question to people that own them and have owned them for a LONG time.

Re: Olympic Arms?

I used to be a hugh Oly fan. I own 2 Olympic rifles that I have built over the years. Last year I ordered an upper; it took 4 months to get and I could never get a response to any e-mails as to if or when it would arrive. When it came it was out of spec. I sent it back and have yet to hear anything from them. My advice; go with a company that will stand up for their product.

Re: Olympic Arms?

I have built 2 AR's on Oly forged lowers, fit n finish were GTG, and I would use them again in a heart beat for a build, I have no experience with Oly complete weapons.

Re: Olympic Arms?

I just used a K16 two weeks ago. It would not except all, but one of my 20round Colt mags. They just wouldn't lock in. The one that did barely did.

That and it is supposed to have a NATO chamber, but 5.56 ammo sounded like a high power magnum out of it. It caught my attention alone with the entire firing line. Very noticeably off what one would expect it to sound like. That and the muzzle flash was impressive. It didn't seem right so we switched to std commercial 223 loads and the sound was typical of this rifle/caliber type.

That was two points I observed while at the range with a friends Olympic K16. Everything else seemed to be okay

Re: Olympic Arms?

My personal and professional experiences with Olympic Arms have not been positive. They are not known for being a high-quality AR-type firearm. If you are truly only going to use it for plinking or as a hobby gun, then it may work fine for you. For anything even remotely more serious, I would strongly advise you to steer clear of them.

The two links below are a great place to start learning more about what to look for:

Explanation of Desirable Features in Commercial M4 Pattern Carbines

Commerical M4 Manufacturer's Poll (AKA: "The Chart")

Hope this helps!

Re: Olympic Arms?

I have a Oly Arms .243wssm 20" 1-8twist bbl. Its fine. Needs better trigger, but everything else is fine. Its my Coyote rifle and has ran like butter since I've got it...2 weeks ago....50ish rounds from mag feed and cycled fine. Will I ever get another...maybe not but as there is better out there. But I have no problems and wouldn't hold back taking it out on any hunt or match..

Re: Olympic Arms?

I have owned several. A couple issues here and there but nothing that I haven't experienced with other manufactures.

Back in the day, OLY manufactured a lot of parts for several if not all AR manufactures in the states. As time moved on many started building there own parts in house.

Re: Olympic Arms?

To use a car analogy - OA to me is the Plymouth of AR's. The only good thing that I ever heard was their rifle cut barrels (SS Ultra Match). Fouled a lot but shot very well, and very tight commerical .223 chamber - so not suitable for mil-spec ammo which i like to shoot.

They were one of the last hold outs to still make a "cast" Aluminum AR receiver (think they are forged now), but would check.

One claim to fame was the AR detachable carry handle. Never checked that claim out, but have seen it in their marketing literature. I like Rock River.

The implication of a redesigned lower that will take a mag capable of longer OALs will be great for a lot of their calibers. Specifically the WSSM and OSSM lines.

Purchased a K16 for my son as an entry into AR shooting.
It was reasonably priced and is holding up well.
