Olympic Sleigh Rider Killed Today

Re: Olympic Sleigh Rider Killed Today

Ouch!

Looks like there is an issue with the track design. Make the turns as hairy as you want but it looks like there would be some pretty simple solutions to keeping the athletes on the track and out of the support poles.

Re: Olympic Sleigh Rider Killed Today

It pisses me off that a competitor died because some moron didn't think to put some padding on a steel beam. I'm sure that it sounded like some one stomping on a bag of chips every time they compressed his chest for CPR.

Dude, at that speed and the beam that solid, ain't no padding was going to save that guy. The good thing is, I bet he didn't feel it... God Bless Him and his family

Some Aussies (known madmen) are saying the luge track is too dangerous. That ought to mean something.
90 mph is, if I recall correctly faster than usual.
At that speed, padding or not, one is dead or worse. There is netting just past that spot, but none there. Additional netting had been put up after complaints, according to one article.
OIC is claiming copyright on all video, so Youtube has had most of them pulled immediately after posting.

This really sucks, and IMO with a lil foresight could have been prevented. For as fast as these people are traveling, the track? walls seemed REAL low, especially with structural beams, and a steel catwalk just a few feet out. Reinforced plexiglass along the top rim of the track? (NASCAR, hockey??? ) could have possibly allowed him to bounce off the side (of the PG) and just finish sliding to a stop. Lives to compete tomorrow....

God Bless him and family +1.

I have a pretty strong feeling that debate will turn into a trial.

Re: Olympic Sleigh Rider Killed Today

I didn't say there weren't answers, but wrapping padding around that pole would have done little to help him. The plexi-glass or the netting that is a WIN for sure. Will be interesting if some sort of trial comes of this. What I hope it does do is raise the standard for track safety and design.

Re: Olympic Sleigh Rider Killed Today

I feel very bad for the family.

But here comes the liability legions font rear and side air bags, traction control, stabilatrac and 12 mph speed governing skids.

For any of you ghouls that haven't seen the video here is a link to some footage and still photos of the aftermath.
