Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and wanted some advice regarding a .338 rifle purchase. I've the following guns shortlisted, though not in any particular preference:
1. Brugger & Thomet APR
2. AI AX
3. Surgeon Remedy
4. Sako TRG42
5. PGM 338
I've fired the AI and Sako and liked them both, I just want to know what experiences other shooters have had with these rifles. Cheers!

Re: Opinions on which .338 to buy?

I own the PGM 338lm - and is very satisfied with it. Have'nt tried any of the others you mention, but have previously owned the TRG-22, so I'm used to the Sako's ergonomics and like it alot! Many of my friends use the TRG 42 and are very pleased.

What I like about the PGM is that it is a medium heavy and stable rifle with excellent accuracy and I do like the fact that it is very well built and not too many of those around. It has a ten shot magazine and mine has an excellent target trigger with approx 600gr. trigger pull. Furthermore I really like the customer service from PGM, and just received another PGM, the Ultima Ratio in 308w. The spare parts and accessories are not that expensive compared to f.eks Sako. If you do buy one also buy rubber shoes for the bipod - highly recommended!

I haven't played with 1 or 5, but the Remedy and TRG-42 are really nice rifles and I wouldn't mind having one of each myself. Of them all however, the AX 338 is definitely the reining .338 king of the pile in my opinion. It is a very civilized rifle for such a large cartridge, and I've yet to come across one that wasn't a frickin laser.

If you are on a budget the .338 Sako TRG42 is impossible to beat. Superb trigger and accuracy at half to 1/3 the price of the others on your list. Price aside, the AIAX is a fantastic weapon, I have 5K rounds on my short action AX and it is very easy to get to fit you right and hence, shoot it well.

At that price point I would also consider the Ashbury ASW. I was fortunate enough to put some rounds through one at targets over a mile, and it is a super nice shooting rifle, very soft shooting because of the weight.

Re: Opinions on which .338 to buy?

If the choice was mine i would choose the AX myself.
Alternatively the PGM.
The TRG is a good rifle, but in my opinion not quite up with AI and PGM. Still it costs a lot less so you get more for you're money.
Surgeon makes nice rifles, but never put my hands on one.
The B&T is essentially a PGM that B&T manufactures themselves.
B&T used to be the main vendor for PGM, there was some issues with marketing and B&T started making they're own rifle, except for some minor external design it's a PGM copy, I'd rather go with the original.

As everyone else has stated, if money isn't a consideration the AI would be top of the heap out of those choices. To save a few pennies the TRG is definitely a great bag for the buck. Best overall choice for the money in my opinion? Surgeon. Good luck!

Re: Opinions on which .338 to buy?

Have you thought about the Blaser Tac 2? I have one in 308 and its a sub 1/4 moa gun if I do my job. I've heard from people who own them in 338 that they are similarly accurate. Add in the fact that Blaser barrels generally last a lot longer than other barrel makers, it makes it a good option in my book.

And what about the Steyr SSG08 he he

Well you gave only the five options above and probably has taken other models into concideration before you made the final list...

Since you live in the UK the PGM should be easy to obtain. You can contact the factory and purchase the rifle directly from them! I have two PGM's with lots of equipment bought directly from PGM Precision. As I said great customer service.

Re: Opinions on which .338 to buy?

My mate has a Blaser 2 and although a lovely rifle I'm just not that fond of the straight pull action, plus I want to be different! As regards Dave Wylde's rifles they appear to be the business, and when I sell my current .308 I think I'll get him to build me a Surgeon action rifle, Valkerie Rifles get very good reviews. As the company that is sponsoring me has stipulated that it must be a production rifle I can't get a custom build unfortunately (not even sure if they'll accept a Surgeon factory rifle). The Timberwolf was one I'd actually forgotten about, but I've never fired or even seen one. This is getting more difficult instead of easier!
