Maybe @koshkin or someone similar would know more about this - When setting the diopter on all of my riflescopes, i always end up with it screwed in all the way to get the best outcome. With spotting scopes and binos i always need to have the eye cups screwed all the way in to get my eye close enough for the best image. It commonly seems like i'd be even better if a diopter would go in even more or my eyes could get even closer on binos or spotting scopes. This seems to be an unusual thing? I cant imagine being able to use binos/spotters with glasses.

Do i have jacked up/unusual vision? Anyone else?

how are you adjusting your diopter? what conditions? has anything changed with your vision recently?
How the mfr instructions dictate. Last one was just looking at a clear sky adjusting to get a clean reticle.

Nothing has changed recently. It’s been like this long as I can remember. At least 10 years.
Do you wear glasses or contacts?

I don’t. Had good vision into my late 20s and noticed a decline around age 30. Wore glasses only for about a year because I’m too big of a pussy with touching my eyes to get contacts out easily. Had enough of dealing with glasses almost immediately and got lasik. That was about 10 years ago and coincided with me getting more serious about shooting and western hunting (where I spend a lot of time behind glass).

most scopes have an adjustment range from about -3 to +3 diopters

if you are turning it all the way in, means you are correcting about -2D to -3D

that's equal to a -2.00 to -3.00 glasses or contact lens Rx

so yeah, get an eye exam and get glasses/contacts if you want that to go away

When I don't have my glasses on, I have to adjust diopter on all my optics (nods/scopes) to wherever minus - diopter to make the reticle look cleanest with my far-sightedness and astigmatism. My rx is -1.5 cylinder diopter and the optics always land roughly about there. Thankfully my vision isn't that bad without correction, so blessed with that.

When I have my corrective lenses on, I adjust the diopter to where the reticle is clean and diopter is magically on the + 0 - marking.

Lasik/PRK/etc aren't permanent. Your eyes are always changing. Get your eyes checked.

Ive never had eye surgical correction, but I might in the next couple years. It took 41 years to get to where it is now, so I figured the lasers would make it good for 15-20 years. We'll see.

You have quite the opposite of aging eyes syndrome. Lol. I have to screw all my diopters out where 3/8" of the tube is showing. I've had some issues with diopter settings when dialed low and high. March scope instructions are to dial max power with infinity parallax and then focus the diopter/reticle. I don't know why that wouldn't apply to all scopes, but it's something to test for yourself.

They actually recommend setting it while at the lowest magnification and in the Q&A they explain their thinking on this

Interesting. I didn’t know that the DOF of the eyepiece becomes shallower at lower magnifications because of more light.

I typically have used a lower-than-max magnification to adjust the diopter for a different reason.

At lower mags, the reticle becomes finer and the little hashes get closer together. All of that makes it easier for me to determine if the diopter focus is dead-on (or not).

I just zoom out until I can still just still see the reticle’s little hashes. I don’t think I could zoom ALL the way out to min magnification to adjust diopter because I couldn’t actually resolve the reticle with my eyes!

Did you have nearsightedness or farsightedness before Lasik? What about astigmatism?
