so yesterday i finally pulled the trigger on my first custom build. this will be a 260 hunting rifle set up to shoot a 130 vld bullet. ive been doing research everyday for well over a year and finally saved up some cash so here is what i ordered.

stiller predator short action with tac knob, stainless, repeater action with a 0moa rail. one of the first things i decided on was a custom action. after you take into account buying a nd trueing a factory action its not much more for a custom action. ill have it in 3 months.

next i ordered a shelin #5 contour 1-8 twist match barrel. i decided not to go select match because this will be a hunting 600-700yd rifle and the select match is not garenteed to shoot better. it will be a 26 inch barrel. i was bouncing back and forth between 26 and 24 and finally decided it was easier to cut some off than add some

as far as trigger im leaning towards a rifle basics trigger. my f-class rifle (also a 260) has a rifle basics and im pretty happy with it. but im going to wait and try and find a deal since i have 3 months to get one.

on the stock in eventually i will get a mcm stock but for now until i probably get a cheaper stock just so i can shoot it while saving more money. im not decided on adl or bdl bottom but i still have some time

i already have a spare set of uso rings and will evenutally get a uso scope for the rifle. for now it will probably get a nikon buckmasters to get me by until i save the money.

aj brown is doing the build so he is giving me pointers and helping me through the process

Stiller is a solid action. If they quoted three months, it might take 6, but this seems to be a common issue with most manufacturers these days. I do hope that you get it sooner, but just want to prepare you for a possible delay.

Shilen is a fine barrel. Some would say that you should go with a cut rifled barrel like Kreiger, Bartlein, Rock, Brux, etc. but nothing wrong with Shilen.

Rifle Basix is also a good trigger if installed and adjusted by a good smith. A Jewell trigger would be the best, but nothing wrong with a Rifle Basix in my book.

Might as well bite the bullet and get the stock that you want now, if money allows of course. I just would hate to see you have to lose money if there was anyway that you could swing for the stock that you want now. Or look for a used stock that meets your needs. I see nothing wrong with a used stock that has been cared for and save you dollars too. Don't forget Manners stocks either!

The Buckmaster is outclassed by all the other items that you are using on your rifle. Why not look for a good scope that is used instead. There are many super high quality scopes on the used market that would serve you better than a new Buskmaster, again IMO. I think that Nikon optics in the Monarch line, as well as Bushnell Elite 4200 series, Leupold, etc, are really quite nice for the money spent and I see them used quite often, that are well cared for and great prices vs new.

You are investing a great deal of money into an action and barrel, but neglecting the optics too much IMO. The good is that you have your core items and can upgrade as money allows. It is tough to buy everything that you want sometimes and still be able to build something to shoot

I do know how that works too.

Best of luck with your build. Hope it s a great shooter for you!

Re: ordered parts for my first custom long range rifle

thanks for all the advise. if i can in any possible way i will put a permanite stock on the rifle as soon as i get it. if not ill get a 25 dollar take off for a month or so until i can save some more. otherwise i would have to wait the month or so to shoot it and that will not work for me.

as far as optics im defintally not set on a buckmasters but for awhile ill stick with what ever scope i find a good deal used on in the classifieds until i can afford a uso/sb other scope in that catagory. it would not be such a issue if i didn't just get a nf for my f-class gun.

it will probably be another 2 years before this rifle is 100% done but im ecited to atleast have it started, and if it takes 6 months on my action its no big deal ive been using my current rifles to hunt with for many years 6 months is not going to kill me

Re: ordered parts for my first custom long range rifle

just a update. ive decided to go with the falcon menace 5-25 for this. im hoping they come out with a moa scope by the time i need it but it doesn't look promising. oh well id like to learn mils anyways so i have more scope options

why? i my smith already has it so its to late, just trying to get some knowlege. i have one sheilin barrel right now that i could not be happier with. it shoots a 1.1 inch group at 300 yards and im not the best shot out there

The nudge to sidestep the Shilen, wasn't secreted from you.
