I have the option to use either Lapua or Black Hills brass. The lapua is new at .65/per and BH is once fired at .45/per. From what I was told and seen here and there, the BH brass is Winchester? Is the savings of .20 worth it to go Winchester? Or is Lapua brass THAT much better? How many reloads can you get from Winchester versus Lapua? ( Assuming its the same loaded round etc, Is it like 5 lapua and 3 winchester? )

Ya know, I got some pretty nice groups with both, had to work a bit to get the lapua brass to shoot good since it holds less powder than the Win brass, if you have the Win brass annealed after a few firings it should last longer, assuming you neck size only like im doing with both.

Not sure, Ive got 2-3 firings with both brass, Lapua is thicker so it may or should last longer as long as I dont push it too hard.

Re: Out of this brass, choose what?

I don't like the flash holes on the Winchester... I opened up 2 bags of 50 and 60/100 had off set holes. Lapua Is a lot more uniform, but you pay for it.

Re: Out of this brass, choose what?

I had about 200 once fired BH cases. I had to ream the primer pocket to seat primers. Not sure if that is all BH or just what I had. You might want to keep that in mind.

Overall Lapua brass has a more consistant wall thickness and much better (drilled, not punched) flash hole. But... if you deburr the flash holes and turn the necks, then the WW brass will work just as well as the Lapua. Useing both in my 223 and really see no difference at 5 loadings.

couldn't have said it better myself.

Re: Out of this brass, choose what?

No brass will perform well/long with hot loads. Assuming this is not your case, the Lapua exhibits domesional tolerances and consistencies that can usually only be found on other brands after they've been match prepped. With sensible load pressures, Lapua can be used a lot of times, but so can other brands.

I use Lapua for my .30BR, and Win or Rem for most of my other chamberings.

For my .223 and 7.62x54R I am trying out Prvi, which is performing well with only flash hole reaming. The Prvi match 69gr works well for commercial ammo in my Stag 6 Varmint AR, but doesn't outperform handloads. It serves well for practice, and the brass works for the handloads.

Re: Out of this brass, choose what?

I managed to pick up about 150 pieces of BHA "Match" brass at the range. Only gripe was that it had crimped primer pockets. (Isn't that a hoot, griping about free brass :))

Found it to be nice and consistent, more so than just run of the mill Winchester even though it had the same capacity.

If I were to buy any more brass it would definitely be Lapua though. Of course I will have to wait until my first 100 pieces wear out. Who knows when that will be. One competitor at our range loads his Lapua Brass as many as 40 times before tossing it. With regular annealing, minimal sizing, and realistic loads, I can see it lasting that long. Of course any envelope pushing loads can definitely shorten even Lapua brass' life.

Re: Out of this brass, choose what?

While I agree that Lapua is top notch in the brass quality department, Norma is not far behind.

On the other hand I have 32 reload cycles on a set of Win cases handling a stiff but not overboard load.
