Pappy;s Van Winkle bourbon? Update on 2019 release.

So what do you suggest?

I dont care about cost, as in, I won't not try or buy a cognac because its not expensive. Hell, some of my favorite I've ever bought were less than 50$ a bottle; Chalfonte VSOP and Roullet VSOP.

Only thing on my radar right now is to finally try the Louis Royer XO because I keep having people mention it to me and to try a Napoleon aged Ferrand that has an interesting mix of flavors I don't think I've ever seen (fruit on fruit with a mint/tobacco finish).

Cognac is literally the epitome of something I'd try more of if they made samples and/or carried them at bars. You're hard pressed to find anything past the usual Remy XO and such at even higher end places; so me spending several hundred dollars on a new bottle I've never tried but the reviews/tasting notes seem to be what I'd like, is non existant.
I like cordon bleu.

My brother took his son down this road on wines years ago.
The kid was buying pricey bottles and parroting online reviews and blog comments about how the superior vintages were worth the money and effort.
His dad played a few tricks on him with some blind taste testing and humbled him pretty well.

I taste, and if I like it I'll buy some more. If not, regardless of the price, fuck it.
I do still prefer barley malt spirits over wheat and corn, but rye makes a nice play.

This goes to show how subjective taste is. I don't care for Weller Special Reserve, which is supposed be aged 6-7 years. It's $19 bottle that goes for $49-$59. Way better stuff out there in that $50 price range. I've done a blind test against Weller 12 and it's not even close comparison with Weller 12 being way better. I've also done a blind test of Weller 12 versus Pappy/Old Rip 12 and there isn't enough difference to justify the mark up on the Pappy 12. I'd rather pay $150 for Weller 12 than $600-$800 for Pappy. The best I've ever had was a Pappy 15, didn't think the Pappy 20 was great (especially for the price). The Weller Antique and Rebel Yell 10 (I got a bottle for $59 MSRP and wouldn't pay over that) are very hot, not my cup of tea. I'd rather go with a bottle of Blantons at $59-$79.

+1 on the Blantons. Tried it for the first time at our friends in Texas and bought a bottle when we got back home.

I love the disclaimer that they can't control the prices...multiply by 10x

I am going to be poor elsewhere

I'm in. I've been able to score some bottles the past few years. I'm guaranteed at least one of the line (usually 20 year old which is my favorite anyway), but really not interested in the 23.
So last year I was able to get 4 bottles (10 year, 20 year, William Larue Weller and George T Stagg).
We'll see about this year! I'm excited!

Man I had an opportunity to get (3) bottles of Pappy a couple years ago. 12, 15, 20yr. Tried it over ice and...it was just alright. Maybe I’m not refined enough to appreciate. Turned the next bottle into Old Fashions. I now have a velvet bag wrapped unopened bottle left in my mini bar(as a conversation starter) that I’m more than happy to part with to someone who can tell the difference between that and the Woodford it tastes like. I’d like to do a blind taste test for those who supposedly can taste the difference.

Bring it on baby.
Yeah, I can tell the difference.

No offense to anyone who likes Woodford. You like what you like and nothing wrong with that. But Woodford is a middle of the road mostly meh spirit. It doesn't do anything wrong and it doesn't do anything really well. In fact, I consider it a good choice for those just getting in to bourbon. But thinking that it tastes like Pappy? That's just wrong man. Not even close in the mashbill or ricking process. You really need to have your tastebuds scraped or something.

I’ll look into the scraping. I don’t discount that there’s probably a difference. I’m fully invested in there being one, and I’m just sad I can’t taste it and furthermore now own this highly prized bourbon that I refuse to waste on my unscraped tongue.

I'm not ready to jump on the pappys bandwagon yet.

I finished my boondocks, now ready to try some buffalo trace

Buffalo Trace is our standard 'go-to' here.... we've had MANY bottles over the years. It is the 'other ones' that are not-so-easy to find. Some say that the BT is not the same as it was when it first came out.

I'll leave that for other 'specialists' to discern and debate.
