Gunsmithing parts washer solvents

is there a chemical you guys are using to wash gun parts in a parts washer?

Will it harm painted surfaces?

Everyone likes Simple Green because its safe on hands, finishes, and is environmentally friendly.

I use mineral spirits.

Stinky, makes your hands look like you play in an ashtray, but it sure scrubs the funk off.

Prolly not a good idea on painted stuff though.

I've used mineral spirits. But it's hell on your skin. Probably gives you cancer.

Mineral spirits or the 5 gal cans of stuff from Northern Tool.

No cancer yet - been using for over 20 years.

Mineral spirits is the defacto standard in the auto industry. SafetyKleen etc.

if the part is a solid metal piece with no rubber or plastic i use paint thiner or its weaker friend mineral spirits. i have use gasoline before but wouldn't recommend it because it reeks terribly,works great but reeks.
