Look, folks, I was interested in the reaction of someone local to the news, not kneejerk responses from the peanut gallery muttering about "usual suspects."

Is it the fact that it's summer again, is it the fact that kids are getting more organized through electronic means to do this stuff <span style="font-style: italic">en masse,</span> or is it just that the economy is this bad and there are very few welfare crutches left in our society? I remember back in the 70s and 80s that organized groups of kids would strong-arm transit passengers and then all run off in different directions from the next station to minimize the chances of being caught.

I had to reread the article myself to see who "Khalid Davis" was. I had to reread the article myself to see who "Khalid Davis" was. Well I used to live there, and return on a rare occasion, do have to say that isn't to far fetched. Went back a few years ago and was told to be careful pretty close to Bradley because of the gangs had gotten crazy. It's funny when I was young there the Latin Kings and Desciples were big, low education and a horrible local government don't help.

Time will tell the full story. Just north of me - Madison Wisconsin - there has been a rash of armed robberies on bike paths, drive by shooting and armed robberies downtown. The media either doesn't report it, or buries it, and the police deny they have a problem.

You're correct, I did not quote Khalid Davis, I paraphrased what he said, in the context of the whole story.
There is no dispute about the ethnic make up of the crowd, nor the unusually large number, in the street, blocking traffic. Davis later contradicted himself when he down played it as a matter of young people marking their turf. I mean, after a fashion, I'm sure we can all sympathize with a crowd of belligerent, non taxpaying, loud mouths claiming the things others pay for as their own...
My reference to Khalid Davis was to both point up the dubious nature of his comment as well as to provide the other side of his own story. The first part I tend to disbelieve, the latter made him laughable. I think I made my point.
I did not use quotation marks in the original post and incorrectly wrote ' I quoted' rather than ' I paraphrased' in my second post.
I don't care enough about it to be sorry.

Peoria.....or certain parts of it are war zones. I would go so far as to say that they rival notorious areas of (S side) Chicago and E St Louis in their day. Given the fact that when Robert Taylor Homes and Cabrini Green and other notorious projects were demolished, many of the residents (and criminal elements there in) moved down state to Peoria, Decatur, Steator, Danville, B/N, C/U, etc.
If you wish to go back farther in the PJStar, you will find it became a sort of running joke recently with the numerous shootings...which seemed to be 1 every 3 or 4 days with quite a few deaths here and there. An article from last year:

And another fun factoid, at the PTI (Police Training Institute), if you have a technique you wish to share, and it becomes part of the curriculum. A few "aggressive" techniques come out of Peoria.
