I took my girl camping up in the mountains last night to watch the Perseid meteor shower and in the process got some good shots of the Milky Way...

Nikon D90
45-90sec exposures because my lens and ISO weren't fast enough
18-105mm 3.5fstop

That was the main reason for the streaking - exposures were so long that the rotation of the Earth mucked with them. Now I'm definitely in the market for a fast wide angle lens or tracking tripod.

Re: Perseid Meteor Shower

Get the lens, you can do more things with it. Tracking mounts are strictly for time exposure astronomical work. On second though, seeing your work, get both...

My lens is a very old Mamaya Sekor 1000TL F-1.4. In its day, I used it for a lot of 'available light' photography. I helped a friend on wedding shoots a lot. The camera was ideal for candid shots because it seldom needed any flash. I have it in my hand right now.

Picked it up while I was in 'Nam. A friend went on O/O Country R&R to H-K. I gave him $250 and told him to get the very best camera he could find, a cheap flash, and the rest in film. He came back with the 1000TL, a cheapo flash, and the Oh-My-God-est bundle of 35mm film I ever saw.

Wow..., just..., Wow...!
