*First let me say this isn't an AI vs TRG thread, those two have been done to death Im more interested in the PGM*

I know AI is at the top of the ladder with the TRG coming in second but where does the PGM fall into the line-up with regard to build quality, reliability, ect?

Anyone with experience handling the PGM? It looks as if it's built like a tank... also looks as heavy as one too.

TRG coming in second??? Smile when you say that, boy!

Not familiar with the PGM, but I assume it has anti-drop-while surrendering technology and a built-in white flag? Is there a cheese-spreading accessory and a wine-bottle-opener? Perhaps a reverse-azimuth compass? Does it come in Yellow?

Is the PGM currently in use w. the Iranian and NK armies, since a French pimp will sell anything to anyone anywhere? You know, like an Exocet missile?

Ok, sorry. I just love French jokes. I can't help myself. I take it all back.

PGM looks interesting. Let's see how it shoots and I'll relent. As long as you take back your TRG comments ;-)

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: PGM vs AI, TRG - quality?

Ok... so I went to the Drake site.

Price certainly seems reasonable. Interesting looking rifle. Nice features.

And they are doing a Group Buy for SH members through Drake -- so Far be it from me to say anything bad about someone who supports the 'Hide.

Can anyone get a good hands-on review out there? Because it certainly looks interesting for the $$$.

Or, feel free to loan me one and I'll put it through its paces... French Jokes Aside. I'd like to shoot one.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: PGM vs AI, TRG - quality?

Well I'm no expert since i have not handled a PGM, they're used by the french military, Nato special forces and some European special police units that i know of.
They are solidly built and known to be quite accurate. Reliability as a rifle for duty uses, never heard anything negative and being fairly widely used should speak for itself.

But maybe someone with more experience on them can come with soem input.

Re: PGM vs AI, TRG - quality?

I don't own a PGM but have a TRG 42, 22 and a AI AWSM in .338. Just put KRG's folder on my 42 and it brings the TRG to another level. AI may be king for durability but for the money, TRG is king in my book.
The AX and the PGM have the scope sitting high above the bore (and yeah, I know the cheekpiece is adjustable) but I believe that being more in line with the bore helps to keep the recoil pulse straight back and therefore helps accuracy.

I don't know... there are some pretty high-speed organizations in there.

I've been reading more and more, including some SH posts dating back as far as 2008 on this. So far, I am pretty intrigued.

The technology on these things in interesting. Swap barrels, aluminum action, folder... those are some features that show up on Blasers, TRG's AI's and other rifles. The aluminum action is very interesting...

I can't find a price for the .308. I can find one on the chassis system through an SH group buy. In older posts on SH c. 2008, I was seeing some super high prices (approaching the 5-figure range). But not sure if that was for the same rifles. Some prices from Chris would be appreciated.

One question I have is whether the alternate barrels for the 30 are available in USA? I saw on early posts that there are some issues with importation... but those may have been addressed w. a US importer. Certainly, there are barrels listed on the Drake site.

Drake is just a few hours from me. PM inbound to Chris so maybe we can get together and shoot one of these things. I'm up for a road trip... besides, I need to tune up for a school next month.

My mind is open...

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: PGM vs AI, TRG - quality?

The PGM has a very quick bbl change which is a Nice feature to have on such an expensive rifle. Just buy a bbl in another caliber and a quick change can be done in the field/range by the user. I haven't shot a PGM but did play with one and I would bet that receiver can be run over by a tank and still function.

Re: PGM vs AI, TRG - quality?

I had a bit of a shooting contest with some French snipers in Kosovo in a town called Mitrovica. They had these PGM's and my old AI L96A1 pissed all over them...

Re: PGM vs AI, TRG - quality?

I have the Brugger & Thomet APR rifle same design as the PGM
it is by far the best thought out rifle ever , far more robust than a trg, ergonomics make me get better scores than with an AI ,
ive owned 2 trgs and an AI so feel qualified to comment, as a side note ive found the AI to have a very small grip, and the new version with the pistol grip is even worse, any one with medium/large hands will feel that the grip is far to short

Re: PGM vs AI, TRG - quality?

Having owned two TRG22's and now a PGM 338, I will say that these are both top quality rifles. However it is my opinion that the older TRG i had was better quality than the later one leading me to keep the new one only for a week or so. The PGM is very well buildt and has many features that I like. In fact I like it so much that I have placed an order for an Ultima Ratio in 308.

I think a lot of TRG and AI owners would be disappointed if their rifle would not do the same.

Re: PGM vs AI, TRG - quality?

So have exchanged a few PM's with Chris and we are trying to synch up our schedules for me to drive down to their range on LI for a demo visit.

My partner and I are going to try and drive down next weekend to put 'hands on' the PGM system.

I'll say one thing for Chris... he has been first-rate responsive. More to follow...

Cheers,

Sirhr
