Picked up a Sako TRG-S in 6.5x55.....now what?

I'm pretty much torn right down the middle on this one. I've wanted one of these for a while, and now I'm considering 1 of 2 things

1) Have it re-barreled and put into a beefier stock and top it off with some S&B PM long-range glass.

PRO: This action and trigger have a TON of potential, and I would hate to see it wasted away as a hunting rifle. Couple this with the 6.5x55, and the thought of it gives me chills.

CON: Manners is a no-go as a stock option. McMillan has yet to respond to my inquiries. It's not looking good for getting a quality tactical stock from the standard makers. I'm pretty sure this will turn into one big money pit of a project.

2) Option 2 would be to leave it in its current "hunting rifle" configuration.

PRO: Cost effective. From what I have seen, heard, and read, these things are insanely accurate as is.

CON: Scope mounting options for this thing suck. Other than proprietary Sako rings, any other option will require a trip to the smith for some drilling and tapping at the very least. The stock is mediocre, and it feels like the fore end is made of styrofoam.

Also, I have no clue on what kind of glass to put on this thing in its current state. Doesn't make much sense to top it with heavy PMII glass now. What the hell do you put on it? NF 2.5-10x? Precision Hunter? Short Dot? There's also a shit load of real estate between that front and rear dovetail for scope rings. I'm not sure some of the more compact scopes have long enough tubes to work.

NEAR Mfg makes an excellent mount for it (needs to be D&T). I know Pete Lincoln also has a nice one. I know McMillan has made stocks for them. Many people put a washer type recoil lug in (ala M700) since the OEM reverse lug is more difficult to bed.

It is heavy for a hunting rifle, and the stock is fragile. I overhauled mine when I tripped in the woods one deer season and broke the stock across my chest! It is made of polyurethane foam with a plastic skeleton core. Very cheesy!

Burris makes scope ring bases for your Sako. I have a spare pair of bases if you want them. It is the hunting type though; dovetail front, and windage adjustable rear.

Manners used to cut inlets for an M995. Are you sure they are a no-go? I know a guy who just bought an M995 inlet from Manners a few months ago.

The Near base sucks. It is actually shorter than the receiver. It looks like it doesn't belong there. I went with a USO base, which is okay, but still requires drilling and tapping. You might also give Murphy Precision a call. They claim to make bases for almost any action. Here is Roedale's base. It doesn't require drilling and tapping.

You are correct, the action is very, very long. I believe because it is the same action for all calibers, including 338 Lapua. A compact scope might have trouble spanning the gap, but if you get a Picatinny rail, it won't matter. Personally, the ass-load of room is a dream come true for long cartridges with long, VLD bullets. I run a 7mmRM, and even 180g VLDs leave about 3/8" of an inch in the magazine! Some guys would kill for that much room!

Convert your rifle! That M995 action and trigger are much better served in a tactical setup.

Here were Tom's exact words as per my email:

"At this time we are no longer inletting for the 995, we used to be able to get the bottom metal but are having a hard time getting it now. You must run a aftermarket trigger guard to make this inlet work. We can get you fixed up on just about any thing else. Thank you very much,"

You've got to testfire the rifle before you tear it apart. Get bases from Redfield that fit the receiver without drilling and tapping. Use Burris Signature rings if you need extra elevation.

An acuurate hunting load is 140gr Sierra SBT in front of 47gr Norma MRP.

Williams Firearms is the only place that makes a replacement bottom metal system for the M995. It is required for the TRG-S because the factory stock has an integral trigger guard.

If obtaining bottom metal is the thing stopping Manners from inletting stocks, it would seem reasonable that they'd do it if you supplied the bottom metal yourself. I'd call Williams direct, or call McMillan. I bought mine through McMillan.
