I'm pretty much torn right down the middle on this one. I've wanted one of these for a while, and now I'm considering 1 of 2 things
1) Have it re-barreled and put into a beefier stock and top it off with some S&B PM long-range glass.
PRO: This action and trigger have a TON of potential, and I would hate to see it wasted away as a hunting rifle. Couple this with the 6.5x55, and the thought of it gives me chills.
CON: Manners is a no-go as a stock option. McMillan has yet to respond to my inquiries. It's not looking good for getting a quality tactical stock from the standard makers. I'm pretty sure this will turn into one big money pit of a project.
2) Option 2 would be to leave it in its current "hunting rifle" configuration.
PRO: Cost effective. From what I have seen, heard, and read, these things are insanely accurate as is.
CON: Scope mounting options for this thing suck. Other than proprietary Sako rings, any other option will require a trip to the smith for some drilling and tapping at the very least. The stock is mediocre, and it feels like the fore end is made of styrofoam.
Also, I have no clue on what kind of glass to put on this thing in its current state. Doesn't make much sense to top it with heavy PMII glass now. What the hell do you put on it? NF 2.5-10x? Precision Hunter? Short Dot? There's also a shit load of real estate between that front and rear dovetail for scope rings. I'm not sure some of the more compact scopes have long enough tubes to work.
