Picked up a Remington 700 SPS Varmint chambered in 308. couldn't pass up the deal with the 75$ mail in rebate they are running until the end of May. It came with a 4-12x Remington scope, hardshell case and sling. I am assuming this scope isn't very good so I will use it in the mean time until I can afford a Bushnell or a Vortex Mil-Dot for it.

Plan is to shoot it this weekend. Can't wait for some range time with it!

I can definitely see this becoming an addicting hobby.

Where did you pick it up at? Congratulations by the way

Not only addicting but can get very expensive!! Shoot the shit out of it and let us know how it does.

Welcome to the Hide!

Gander Mountain, they do the scope/rifle deal on a lot of Remingtons I got a similar package there when I got my 597

Congratulations again. Post some pictures when you get a chance. I'm still trying to decide which rifle to buy at this point?

Re: Picked up my first bolt rifle

Shooting bolt action is the best experience I've ever had shooting firearms. You learn to make a mental checklist. Things like trigger squeeze, natural point of aim, and breathing. I make sure I'm doing EVERYTHING in my power to not push a bad shot. Once I finally take a shot it may have taken up to 5 minutes for me to feel comfortable. After the shot I think about what I may have done wrong and I fix it.

That's what I enjoy about bolt action. I'm new to it as well. A lot more fun, challenging, and rewarding in my opinion than other small arms.

Have fun and stay safe!

Re: Picked up my first bolt rifle

Good job...That about what my sps tactical cost with no scope about 3 years ago. I ended up waiting 2 years to shoot it because, with the birth of my son, my shooting budget was severly cut. I just got back into shooting this in December, and since joining this website I have easily spent 3000$ on shooting supplies. Thanks SnipersHide!!!

Re: Picked up my first bolt rifle

I picked up the same gun at Gander last week for my first long range gun. I shot it the first time two days ago, and it was a blast. The scope isn't as bad as I expected either.

I'm still pretty new to the whole world of long range shooting, so my results probably aren't typical. I did a couple three shot groups at 100 yards, and they were all about 3 inches or so. But my shooting partner (much more experienced) shot one group with the rifle, and his was just over an inch.

I sent the rebate off this morning. Hopefully it won't take too long - I need accessories...

don't hold your breath waiting for the rebate. I'm still waiting on my rebate for my 597 that i mailed in over 6 weeks ago.

Re: Picked up my first bolt rifle

I kinda expected a longer wait time. Fortunately, I'm a patient person.

I'd be curious to know how your rifle shoots when you get it out this weekend.
