Gunsmithing picking internal threads

When you gunsmiths are truing the interior threads of a Remington 700 action, how are you picking the threads? When I am picking them up on external threads it seems pretty easy, lock down the thread lever, and then adjust with the cross and compound until the threading bit is perfectly aligned. I am having trouble wrapping my mind around how to line it up on the interior?

Thanks for any tips

Re: picking internal threads

It is basically the same process, but when I pick external threads, I can see how the threading tool lines up, with internal threads you are basically blind? Guess I am wondering if there is a good way to do this without slamming the carbide around too much and chipping it

Re: picking internal threads

It's the same process as external threads but, on the internal threads, I use a step stool, magnifying glass and bright light. I look over and into the receiver making my adjustments as needed. The machine is off of course, the E-stop set. Once set I adjust my depth of cut with the cross slide only and not the compound.
