I have been wanting to try out high power (Palma) type shooting for some time... and mainly have stayed away as the money for some of the iron sighted rifles was a tad much for me..

Well... I have been looking at one and chatting... and I guess the moon and stars aligned just right.

I am about to be the NEW owner of a VERY OLD rifle. Its a Winchester Mod 70 TARGET in .308

It has the Redfield sights, mounts, inserts etc...

It is setup for stripper type clips and is also tapped (FACTORY) for a scope base for optics.. The appearance is MUCH like the Winchester version of a Remington M24...

A very nice rifle and I am EXCITED at getting some time behind it to do some iron sight shooting and high power matches locally.

According to the ORIGINAL owner the rifle dates back to MID-LATE 40's...

Its a blind mag setup in a VERY nice looking wood stock that has the rail under the bottom.

I will snap pictures of it as SOON as it gets here.

Ohhh and the best part.... the price was just too good to pass up on.

Thanks

Re: Trying my hand at something NEW....

Thanks guys... I know... Like I need ANOTHER rifle to throw money at... Ohh well.. I have wanted one for a while.

If ANYONE has a good line on accessories let me know... I am looking for a hand stop...sling... etc..

I know it has the ANSHUTZ rail on the bottom of the stock.. BUT could be the Winchester version (FREELAND) I believe it is..

I will post up the pics as soon as it is here.

I'm eagerly awaiting pictures! I have a soft spot for old M70's, and an even bigger soft spot for Palma rifles. Someday I'll make my way into the sport...

FWIW, if you're still looking for all the accessories that go along with the sport, you can find all you need from:

http://www.creedmoorsports.com/shop/home.php

http://www.championshooters.com/store/home.php

http://www.champchoice.com/

And if you are really serious about the sport, I would strongly suggest you look into <span style="font-style: italic">Ways of the Rifle</span>. It's an expensive ($60 through Champion Shooters Supply) book translated from German to English, packed full of information. More information than I could even wrap my mind around... It's based after smallbore and Air rifle 3 Position shooting but is split up into the three positions and goes into incredible detail regarding position. Obviously the prone portion is what you would be interested in. I'm not sure if all of the principles of smallbore prone translate into high power prone but I would guess it is all similar at the very least.

The other book that has been recommended to me countless times is David Tubb's <span style="font-style: italic">Highpower Rifle</span> which I have not yet had the chance to read so I cannot offer my own personal recommendations but I have been told by several accomplished shooters that it is worth picking up. It's $20 through Creedmoor.

Best of luck, and don't forget to post up pictures when you get that rifle in-hand!!!
