So I just got my savage FCP-K in, and put everything together. I thought I would upload some pix for anyone thinking about getting one. I'll try to get some better quality pix but for some reason these came out bad. The setup is with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50mm, EGW 20moa base, and burris XTR low rings.

The only problem I had was finding a good location for the scope. I had to put the rings as far back as I could to where the objective still had clearance and the scope as far back on the rings as I could. Even after all this and making the setup look off centered, Its barely far back enough for a semi-comfortable cheek position. If it was up to me I would have it a full 1-1.5 inches farther back.

Am I doing something wrong or is the eye relief on this scope just not that great?

Hey man, nice rifle. As far as the scope goes, it is a nice scope for the price, but it doesn have a really short eye relief. That's why you can't get it far enough back. You're going to need to get a different scope.

I shot a .338 ultra mag this weekend with that scope on it and it was really scary shooting it with the scope. I couldn't get a comfortable cheek weld and when I did, I couldn't see and edge to edge picture through the scope, which was probably a good thing. If I had gotten any closer, it would have bitten me.

one other thing is that EGW base. it is way longer than my Ferrel. i had the EGW first. i didnt like the way it hung over the barrel nut. i would have to take the base off to get the barrel off. so i went with the ferrel. being shorter i could move the scope back without the obj touching. try this. you are going to need a karsten anyway i bet. so get medium rings. they are a 1/4" taller. bad part is you are out of room on the tube to move it back. must be super short eye relief. its gonna mess up your getting a natural point of aim possibly. a different scope may be best in the future.

Yea I'll have to test it out on the range and see where to go from there. As long as Im still comfortable with the current setup, is the way it is now, ok? (with the rings all off centered).

You will love the rifle. Can be a consistent .5MOA rifle with good ammo. Try Lapua case, 44gr Varget with a 168 or 178 Amax and it will shoot. I got mine two years ago, it nows wheres a choate tactical stock, bedded, SSS comp trigger. And will get a full overall soon.

the only thing negative is that it will start you off with poor or bad form. that could cause other bad habits to develop that will have to be trained out later. someone will correct me on this im sure, but you will be compensating for the scope, eye relief, bad cheekweld or chinweld, and the stock if it fits you then you will have to be in a poor position as opposed to a comfortable one just to get in firing position. just be aware of all of that when you start off

Congrats on the new weapon, I love mine so far.

I got this same rifle right after 'the election' and it sat in the safe unfired until two weekends ago. It has an 8.5 x 25 x 50 Vari-X III Varmint Leupy on it.

Started at 44.5 grns of Varget, Sierra 175 HPBT, 2.81", Win New Brass, Win primers. Brass sized only.

First five rounds were shoot and clean, barrel break routine. Bore sight had me about 5" to the left at 100 yds but was dead on with vertical. Anyways, the first five rounds went into just over an inch group 5 inches to the left of the bullseye.

I adjusted over 20 to the right and 8 up. I shot another 1" group with a cleaning between every shot again. It grouped 2" high and dead center. After that second group I moved over to the 275 yd gong and hit 6 of 6 with about a 6 inch holdover. This was fire two and clean at this point.

Then I moved over to the 350 yd gong that is broken at our range and dangles, and twists after being hit, with one chain. I had 3 rounds left over. I hit first shot, missed second, and timed the third one for a hit again.

One inch groups are nothing to get excited about but this was the only load I had and I was there more for break in than anything else.

The following weekend, this past weekend, I loaded up 5 rounds at 44.6 and five rounds at 44.8.

The 44.6 grouped about the same, right at an inch.

The 44.8 shows real promise. Center to center it shot about .65 at 100 yds. Keep in mind this is still under 30 rounds fired on a factory gun.

That was the best group I have ever shot. My best group with my hunting rifle is right at an inch and I had a Rem 700 .220 Swift that I shot a .8 group with ONCE.

I am a beginner, but this Savage has me excited. I have loaded up another ten rounds at 44.8 and ten more at 44.8 but down to 2.80" on COL. I am seeing zero signs of pressure with brass or bolt lift but I am inspecting every round very closely between shots.

I know I am very close to getting to max with the 44.8 and the only reason I may try .1 increase is to see if I can get an even tighter group. I will play with seating depth before changing my charge because of how full my case already is. I know Winchester brass is the roomiest so I felt ok starting at 44.5 but most other brass would need to be started a few grains lower.

I am happy with a .65 IF I can repeat it with regularity and keep accuracy like that at longer ranges too. My first goal is a 3" to 4" group at 500, but I will practice a great deal at the 350 yd line first.

I think that you'll be very happy with your Savage. I have it in a .300WM left handed version. Is yours a .300? It looks like a long action to me. I have the same setup as far as rings and mount go, but put a Vortex Crossfire 8-32x50 on mine. I'm not having the same scope issues, however.

Re: Pictures of the new Savage FCP-K

Took it to the range today. Eye relief ended up being ok with this current setup. With recoil it ALMOST hit's me though, but not quite. I can't comment on the accuracy, as the entire time I was working on zeroing, and getting used to the recoil of the rifle. For what its worth I had a 3 shot group at 50 yards that was basically all in one hole. But most my other shooting was not so great.

The recoil from the rifle onto my shoulder was nonexistant. The pad and brake did its job. Didn't feel a thing.

My absolute favorite thing about this rifle so far is the trigger. I love the accutrigger. When I'm preparing I squeeze the insert, and when Im ready just a very slight squeeze fires. It takes almost no effort and breaks like glass. It still 'surprises' me every time how easily and crisply it breaks, even 30 shots later. I never thought my trigger was too bad on my 22, but after this I went back to my 22 and thought I never released the bolt. Turns out I just didn't press hard enough on the trigger, felt like trying to push a wall with my finger.
