Places to look for a Sako TRG 42 I can afford?

I have posted a lot recently as I researched the bolt action rifle marketplace, and have favored the idea of a Sako TRG 42 in 338 Lapua. My biggest concern with the TRG was cost of not just the rifle, but also the rapacious pricing of the genuine Sako TRG accessories.

I've gotten enough information now via a couple of other threads on what aftermarket products and sources can equip me at sensible prices with the Pictanny scope rail, Pictanny rail for my exisitng Atlas bipod, a muzzle brake, and extra magazines. So, I think it's down to finding out whether, and where, I could get either a new TRG 42 in 338 Lapua, with NONE of the options (i.e. no scope rail, no bipod, no brake), or a nice used one with or wothout factory or aftermarket options, at the best possible price.

I've looked at Eurooptics, as they had offered and aggressively advertised these at a great $2250 price back in July, but its owner told me yesterday that his current best price is $2600, which seems like a LOT more than that July price. I've seen other new ones advertised on a couple of the gun sale or auction sites at that $2600 to $2700 price as well.

Is that the best I could currently do on a brand new one?

What about used ones? What is a reasonable expectation on a price for a used one that has been cared for properly and knowledgeably, and has not consumed too much of its barrel life?

I just bought 2 trg 22s. I looked high and low for a deal. I was lucky but I held out for about a year before the right deal came along. Like the old saying goes "good, quick and cheap, pick two" personally I would buy a new one and suck up the hit. A used 338 barrel could be toast depending on what the previous owner did to it. The piece of mind and instant gratification is worth a couple hundred more in my mind.

Trying. Perpetual busy signal on their phone line, and the website provides no email contact info.

You have to keep trying. They are quirky and have only one line in and it stays busy all the time. I will almost guarantee you that they will have the best price that you will find on a TRG. They do on almost everything else but I never priced a TRG when I lived there.

Don't write off the used market. There are guns out there with very low round count (especially in the .338's, which cost a lot to shoot.) And safe queens. Let someone else take the depreciation.

It would take a lot of rounds to burn out even a .338 barrel on a TRG.

In addition to the usual places like Gunbroker, watch the For Sale section here on the 'Hide. Lots of good folks selling good stuff -- and doing it honestly.

And you won't regret your investment in a TRG, new or used.

Just my $0.02.

Cheers,

Keep an eye on the classifieds here. You missed out on the killer deal, move on.

As for accessories, the only thing I consider a non replaceable accessory are the magazines - at least at this time (no I have no other inside info on aftermarket)

Everything else is completely replaceable with quality aftermarket items.

Scope Base/Mounts
Near
Warne
Spuhr - no base needed

Bipods
Atlas
Harris
RND and Another one I forget ATM

Muzzle Brakes:
APA Fat Bastard
Muscle Brake - I currently use this on my TRG.42 in .338LM - Very efficient
Grizzly
Near - I had one and it's a good brake. I think the muscle brake is a little more efficient. Difficult to quantify other than I think so.

Other options:
Folding Stock:
KRG - High Quality, very comfortable and adjustable. Less than half the price of the Sako folder.

Monopod:
Atlas
