They did not put all 5000 pounds of explosives in the truck.
Most of the explosives were commercial fireworks from china which were taken away by truck.
There were coke can IED's that were deemed to dangerous to transport. That is what they blew up in the truck. They also did not put all of the IED's in the truck at once to keep the amount in the truck below the safety margin for the truck.
This was not in this story but was in another story.

    More footage of the incident.

So they seize 5000lbs of illegal fireworks which would have most likely went to backyard BBQs and nighttime 4th of july celebrations, and in turn fuck up and detonate it inside a neighborhood injuring citizens. I can easily tell who is more dangerous to society. And it aint fuckin fireworks in the hands of citizens.

    Smells like blue_line bull_shit

if that was the case they wouldn’t now be saying they don’t know what caused the fireworks to go off

The EOD guys should have known better. Unknown stuff is one at a time if I remember right.

I had dealings with EOD to get rid of a large number of things they were not trained on and " we " had to follow an ass load of thier rules.

One of the biggest was one item at a time, no piling stuff up.

I nearly got an article 15 but base commander ultimately determined my method was the best practice available.

The article I read did not say that did not know what set off the explosion. It did say they did not know what the IED's were made of which is why they chose to detonate on site.
The article did not say if this blast was the first disposal blast or not so there is a very real possibility that we don't know everything and may never.
The article did say that more than 1 coke can was placed in the chamber to be detonated but it was less than half of the devices that they found.

Pretty sure safety margine went right out the fucking door allong with the controled detonation slick.
"Police chief Brain fart" i have an idea lets detonate some IED's inside of a box truck in a residential neighborhood, what could go wrong.
With fucktards like that calling the shots there is no need for terrorist.

    "illegal fireworks".....lol

Can't let the plebeians have a shred of enjoyment in their lives

LAPD must have gotten their EOD training in Beirut 😂
Umm at that quantity, it’s an actual crime. We can all agree having a few fireworks and shooting them off can be fine, but 5000 lbs stored in what I can only assume was not a federally approved container (cause it came out of a residents) is not ok to the safety of the community. Here’s what happened a few hours drive north a few months ago:

    Well of course it did.
They had coke cans with a standard fuse coming out of it and based on that they guessed what it would put out on detonation.
Just because It has a fuse coming out of it doesn't mean the contents absolutely has to be able to be set of by that fuse.
Without knowing the contents there was no way for them to know what was safe and as others have said they should have done 1 at a time.

    Numptys gotta nump i guess.
Whoever made that call should be fired first and charges brought against them.

When I was a child fireworks were distributed to children along with a cigarette to light them with all accross America.

Dad always got to light the big one.
We used to buy a gross or M80's for $15.00 or so. Those things are sweet, take your fingers right off.

Its all fun and games until someone loses a eye or a few fingers. Wonder why no one taught him to throw it after you light

According to the local news ........yeah I know...... They put 10 pounds of homemade fireworks in their disposal trailer that was rated for ,and I quote, 15 pounds of explosives...... 15 pounds of what I thought to myself, black powder or C4? Anyhoo it blew their bomb disposal trailer to smithereens. Now there is an investigation into why it failed. There was no problem till the leos showed up. Now 17 injured and a boatload of taxpayer money down the drain. I have always said judgements against the police should come out of the police pension fund then a lot of this shit would suddenly cease.

probably had Mark Serbu built the trailer for them :ROFLMAO:

I wonder how the truck driver made out.

Interview of the serbu trailer builder...ppphhhhhhh (takes hit off massive bong) "Yeah man I don't know what could have happened I doubled the beads on that puppy it shoulda been good for at least......3x that many boom booms"

Yes, it was a planned detonation of items they did not want to transport, ~10lbs worth according to this one report:

Here is a possible explanation. They thought that the stuff put in the sphere would act like black powder but it acted like C4. Deflagration to detonation transition is the technical term. Confinement is one way to make that happen.

The home-made devices in the photos were cardboard tubes with cannon fuses. Typical fill for these is flash powder, mixtures of Potassium Chlorate or Potassium Perchlorate or Potassium Nitrate and fine Aluminum powder plus a small amount of a suitable catalyst.

These mixes are classified by ATF as high(!) explosives after some spectacular industrial accidents where deflagration transitioned to detonation and caused damage similar to the results that high explosive would have yielded. I also found this on an older bulletin board:
"Fireworks" by Dr. T. Shimizu (1981) cited an experiment in Japan wherein a common flash comp (KCLO4 x%, Alx%, Sb2S3
x% ...the common Japanese formula, what Shimizu calls his loudest) was initiated with a common #6 fuse-cap. It did indeed detonate @3100mps.

I do not think that anyone would have considered detonating 10 pounds of HE in that sphere to be a wise idea. But 10 pounds of unknown stuff that may detonate instead of deflagrate is somehow OK? If they decided to dispose an unknown substance locally because they were too worried about the risk of transporting it, then maybe it would have been be a good idea to treat the stuff with the same respect as the overaged, sweating dynamite in that old movie.

On the other end of the competence spectrum are EOD specialists who can reliably deflagrate the high explosive content of a 2000 (!) pound WWII bomb in the middle of a British town as shown here

Despite what the title and the commentator says, this was NOT a detonation as evidenced by the lack of the characteristic shock wave and the survival of the surrounding city blocks.

Perhaps the cap on the sphere should have had more than 4 threads......
    Good joke.

But - in reality - anything past 3 or 4 threads is not adding much more strength. Check "load distribution" here towards the bottom of the pdf.

What the Serbu lacks is an independent safety "catch" like the third lug on the old Mauser actions. There are several well documented experiments where people tried to blow up a K98 with pistol powders and heavy, oversized bullets. They managed to blow the barrel up or out but could not get the bolt to leave the receiver rearwards - as the designers intended.

Deflagration has nothing to do with C4. You can take C and light it on fire, and it will deflagrate without an explosion. Any expansion of gasses during ignition in a container is enough to dtd if it the expansion increases past the speed of sound. The fact is those FBI blast containment vessels have certain ratings that was exceeded, or there was a major manufactor error.
