welcome to the second installment in VJJP's "poor man" series. Today I will showcase my MOD-1'ish build. I started with a complete rock river service rifle upper I found in the trash, complete with free floated DCM tube, and 20 inch stainless match barrel.

m5-9.jpg

next step was to dig out a left over junk Knights M5 RAS system from the bottom drawer of my crap cabinet and set about modifying it to mount on the service rifle tube. this is all explained here..

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1979482

ending up with this

m5-11.jpg

next thing was to remove the garbage A2 front sight housing and install a Badger micro gasblock

mod-1.jpg

you might say "VJJ, wassup wit dat 20 inch barrel?" well pardner what i did next was took it up to a buddy's garage where he cut it down to 18 inches and rethreaded and crowned it. sorry no pic.

so from here I was like "damn son, what do i does with that stupid hole in the barrel from the front drift pin, fill it or what?" and then a voice from heaven said "my son, have your friend cut you a custom collar a little long to cover it", what a wonderful idea, AND BAM

mod-1-2.jpg

so now we are getting close but you might say "yo JJ, hey JJ, HEY RETARD, stainless steel has a case of the GHEY" (damn you guys are rough) so what a mofo had to do was take it to GAP, have them set the collar's set screw into the barrel and cerakote the bidness black, and VIOLA

mod-1-1.jpg

now take the upper, slap it on a lower that just so happens to have a geissle service rifle match trigger in it and what you get is a MOD-1 like free floated match barrel'd heavy boat oar, BOOYICA BOOYICA BITCH

and just because i picked this paperweight up today i'll throw this pic out there

stay tuned for more in the VJJ's Poor Man series..............

Re: Poor Man's MK12 MOD-1

Best series title ever nomination. Badass. And an appropriately badass paperweight to boot. Shoulda left the stainless more stainless. Shit looks blingy-er.

That and calls it a MK12 Mod-ggggggGGGg.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">xmark-Where is the poor man part? </div></div>

well the poor man part comes from these tidbits

A) the Rock River upper was one I've had for about 4 years collecting dust in the safe, got it to shoot Service rifle EIC matches but just never had the time to get into another sport. So, the "trash" refers to the safe full of shit that hasnt seen daylight in a while. Now granted i paid full value 4 years ago, but if your like me if it was paid for more than a year ago and you almost have forgotten about it, its like its free.

B) I didnt have to pay for the cutting down of the barrel, or the custom collar, a buddy of mine did those in his garage.(screen name on here jb7032)

C) the M5 RAS was something I had laying around, and regardless nowadays they can be had used for dirt cheap since they are considered obsolete.(couple weeks ago at the CMMG store I saw a bin full of them for 50 bucks each)

D) I won the geissle trigger from All Army, so that was free

E) I gave a handy to a traveling salesman for the scope and base

Re: Poor Man's MK12 MOD-1

so if you are running a custom collar, you would have an extra original ops collar left over right? wanna part with it?

BTW- I like the free float mod on the m5, passing that on to a buddy who wants to do the same thing. thanks.

I left it over at my buddy's house when he made the custom collar, we took some measurements off it, let me get it back and it's all yours

Re: Poor Man's MK12 MOD-1

Mod 1ish midlength almost complete. vjayjay you can have your collar back now. I just need to get a brake. Is it just me or is there something else missing? I know that Aimpoint looks absurd on there and I need a front sight. BTW Larue handguard insn't exactly correct but neither is a midlength "Mod 1"

Nice work on the build, and apparently guns are every bit as real an addiction as heroin or crack.

"Black Rifle Disease makes heroin addiction look like a vague wish for something salty." Forget who said that.

Nice build, and +1 on the get a real upper block before you bend something. Let us know how it shoots.

Awesome looking stick.</div></div>

trigger set was free, M5 was free, so somewhere in the ballpark of 1.5 mil

Re: Poor Man's MK12 MOD-1

bcw, thanks. I'll post pics when I get the Ops brake installed. Its gonna present a problem permanently attaching, due to the external treads. I think I got it figured out though.

Re: Poor Man's MK12 MOD-1

Hey VJJ did you use rockset or locktight for the Ops Inc. brake? Instructions recommended Rockset and i don't have any at the moment but i do have lock tight.

i actually just used grease, now the collar is rockset'd on but dont know that its really necessary with the set screw, as long as the barrel has a dimple cut into for the set scre to dig into

I actually have two that belong to you. The other one is the black one that somebody hacked off. Also, the other one needs the threads for the set screw cleaned up. I'm not sure what thread it is, check the ones you have to see what thread it is. I'm not sure if I have a tap to do it with.

Not just your name but the methods you must use punishing those meddling ass vajayjays. I guess that keno was free at community college too. Man you crack me up.

Anytime I need a laugh I can always count on you.

Re: Poor Man's MK12 MOD-1

It looks a lot better with a real optic, at first glance it's hard to tell it's a middy.

My mod O is a middy Noveske, I just put on a rifle length PRI over a low-pro block and stuck a non-functional PRI style flip-up in front of it (it flips, but isn't a gas block).

Here is a full length mod 1, just for the looky-loos to compare.

...and here is what I did with your collar, please excuse all the extraneous shit in my garage and the bitchin' wore out keen shoes, lol.

+1 I have a friend with a near identical sense of humor; it's nice to see it in print. That and it's funny as fuck.

hey, that can looks familiar. Also just FYI, that last round sounds loud cause some central missouri mouthbreather shot his 30 ort 6 boat oar right behind me(me=one taking the video) pretty much at the same damn time the middy mod-1 fired

Indeed.. Staying warm while shooting is of the utmost importance.
