My Father worked at a plant where the process created a lot of heat. They would pipe water, a lot of water, from the river, use it to cool the machinery, run it through cooling towers to pull the heat back out then release the water to the river.
Dad participated in a meeting with the EPA in the early 70's that reviewed the effluents from the plant. The EPA was in it's infancy and everyone, on both sides, were coming to grips with new regulations.
The question of allowable pH for cooling water released back to the river was asked. Plant personnel said they considered a pH of between 6.8 and 7.2 allowable. Dad told me one of the EPA guys slapped his hand on the table and stated he wanted "that damn pH down to 0". The meeting was recessed while the EPA regrouped. Once the meeting resumed this specific EPA Rep. had nothing further to say.
40 years later and now they want to get rid of CO2. The wheels on the bus go round and round .........................
