Imagine being a player on a sports team and your coach is always lying to you. Your team, with your lying coach, is playing against another team. The other team also has a coach that lies to them.
Now imagine that one side is losing. They can see the scoreboard and they know who and when the points are scored. Nevertheless, the losing team's coach keeps lying to them and telling them that they are winning. They can't give up because they are going to win.
It can get worse than that. The winning team's coach is lying to his players and telling them that they are losing. They need to play harder or they aren't going to go for pizza after the game. Imagine him telling the sponsors or the parents that the team is losing and that's why he needs more money for better equipment and training.
It can get even worse than that. The parents or sponsors of the opposing teams believe the lies the coaches are spreading about respective wins and losses. They cheer the players on and expect maximum effort. We've all seen the parent living vicariously through their kid and chews his ass if he fumbles or strikes out.
The only ones that seem to know the truth are the players on the field.
It might be a poor analogy but it's the best one I have for now.
