WARNING: VERY GRAPHIC.
Ukrainian soldier's bodycam captures the soldier on patrol getting into a prolonged close quarter fight with who seems to be a North Korean soldier fighting on the Russian side. The North Korean had a fixed blade knife and stabbed the Ukrainian multiple times, who was slowly bleeding out and dying right to the end.

In a world without ranged weapons, the knife would be the ultimate apex weapon. Even in a society where around 40-50% routinely carry guns, you got less than a couple of seconds to notice that an altercation has escalated to a knife fight and react to such. The Uke guy even had a gun, but was ran up on too fast for him to get it in battery in time. Another thing to note: It is pretty wise even in routine EDC to carry not one, but a few small "clinch pick" type blades like T handle push knives distributed around easily accessible points of your daily wear. If shit gets really bad and one of your arms are compromised or being grabbed, you can still draw a blade from somewhere else and end the situation quickly. Contrary to public belief, martial arts moves of gouging an assailant's eyes or such are NOT really that effective at stopping attacks. That is why a medium sized Cold Steel T-handle rides on my belt and a larger one is suspended from a tool loop inside any jacket I am wearing for the day with the handle facing downward...
