In 1991 I hitchhiked up the M1 heading to Scotland, and got dropped off in Nuneaton. Its was a pretty little town surrounded by a farming community at the time. We ate and drank among the locals at the pub. They weren't very warm and welcoming at first, but after a few pints they warmed up to us and we eneded up drinking and partying with our new friends. We asked a cop where we could camp for the night, and he told us to camp on the lawn bowling green in the park in the middle of town, which we did. It was like camping on a putting green.

There are a lot of countries that foreigners are not allowed to own land. You can own an apartment, but not land. This would make sense to do this in the US.
