Hunting & Fishing Post your SMK/Match bullet kills

It was actually in the shoulder. I should have taken a pic of the entrance and the organs. Very little organ damage. That shoulder was broken and floppy. Skin tore down to the bottom of the chest. It was hard skinning her with the shoulder practically torn off.

Damnedest thing I've seen while hunting. I stood and scratched my head for quite a while over that one. I still chuckle a bit over it. I have a few hundred 120s left, I may give it a go next year when I hunt a more open area where the shots will be 300-500 yards.

Still not as gruesome as the 100gr NBT I put in the shoulder of an 11pt buck at the same 30 yards. I posted those pics about 3 maybe 4 Sniper's Hide's ago. They were on photobucket, not sure if I can retrieve them.

168gr smk at 225 yards. No blood trail for shit but she only made it 12 yards

Regardless of antler score that is a heck of a buck 5r...Congrats

Thanks guys it was a hell of a weekend none the less. Found out last Friday i was accepted into Dental School. Was on cloud 9 for about 48hrs. Here's one from the front. I agree still a great buck. I find it funny because we were just really checking fields looking for meat, wasn't seriously hunting but he was chasing. When i'm seriously hunting i never see decent deer. Though i think i almost always miss prime rut.

No photos, as I was not going to hike 3 hours across a big choked canyon and a 500+ elevation gain to take a picture with a coyote. But a 230 Berger Hybrid @ 3068 from my .300RUM put down a coyote with authority at 1365 yards. He was feeding on an elk carcass during the late season elk hunt in AZ, and I put a stop to that quick.

30*F
22.42 Baro
Up 16* look angle
1365 yards
8.2MIL elevation
L2.2 MIL hold
1st round hit, a touch back, but spun the coyote sideways, tumble, flop flop flop......done.

Here’s a few pics of damage from a couple of the 105 Hybrid kills over the last month. Definitely a very violent bullet to say the least, it appears they like to penetrate a few inches and then fragment dumping all of their energy. It hits with authority. I don’t think I’d hesitate using it for any NA animal besides moose and large bears.

Pics are headshot on a doe, shoulderish shot on a fox, and ass shot on a opossum. Everything I have shot with this combo has died instantly, have also taken other foxes, coyotes, and groundhogs with similar results. The impact flipped the deer over on its back so quickly that it’s legs were still straight up in the air, have never had that happen before. The impact on the opossum was by far the loudest and deepest I have ever heard, it reminded me of tannerite going off. The view through thermal of the chunks of it spread about after the shot was pretty incredible to say the least.

Don’t click the pics if you have a weak stomach.

Anyone taken anything with 123gr scenars or 123gr ELD-Ms? Been using 123gr scenars but don't think i'm pushing them fast enough.

Forgot to take a pic of the exit hole. 130 AR hybrid at 2881 fps, few hundred yards. bang flop, dropped like a sack of shit 102 lb doe.

So in the last couple of days since the 123gr scenar got a much needed boost in velocity it seems to perform better. Though one doe was spined at 408yds, the one in the picture was at 109yds, and killed a bobcat at 70yds.

I haven't personally, but i know people who have. killed em. Idk if that is the optimal placement like it would for a berger but it seemed to work.

Idk why it's news to me but i never even knew about a high shoulder shot till this week lol. I was always told growing up slightly behind the front shoulder, then personal favorite if i'm feeling good go straight to CNS and be done with it. Then started looking at these high shoulder shots and am thinking i've been doing the bergers a disservice all these years.

lol. Take the wheels out, and they go nowhere. Its a good bit of mass getting hit to create hydrostatic shock and kill em dead. Bullets perform best when placed on a target that is suitable for that bullet. You talk to anybody over at Berger and they'll tell you 100 times out of 100, shoot high shoulder.

I couldn't find any 140gr Elite hunters for dad's SAUM which is what we've been using. Seems there is still a shortage too. So i just got him some 143gr ELD-Xs. Which truthfully i think he'll like more seems it mushrooms better on conventional shots. Should work fine for a high shoulder though right?

I took a cow elk this year at 320 yards with a 6.5 creedmoor and the 143 ELD-X. She was quartering to me. I placed the bullet front shoulder and she dropped in her tracks. The bullet impressed the hell out of all who saw the shot. The bullet performed well for my wife the day before with a more conventional shot behind the shoulder. Shot was about 250ish behind the shoulder. Cow trotted about 20 yards and fell over dead.

I got some elite hunters left if u want them. Most of a box of 100. don't know how many. I can count them up if u want.

I appreciate the offer but seeing as hornady as readily available and will do everything the elite hunter will as far as high shoulder shots are concerned and seems to be better suited for more conventional shots. I’ll probably stick with it. I also like that it’s 18$ cheaper.

For those of you talking about high shoulder shots, what is it specifically that you all mean? I know my dad likes to shoot them high and place the shot on the spinal cord. It drops them right then and there so he likes it for that, no need to go looking in the brush to recover the deer. However over the past many years, we have also had to go and finish off the buck. That's even after waiting about 30 to 45 minutes from the time the shot was taken. He shoots with .270 if it matters. I wish I had pics to post in order to show where his shot placement is but I just don't have any at the moment.

That video explains high shoulder very well, thank you. How come growing up I never heard of this? I've always been taught behind the shoulder and low on the body to get heart and lungs. I've also heard of and seen neck shots. Is this becoming more popular as of recently? Looks like you've got your work cut out with recovery. I may have to try it out myself...

I had no idea about it until now either but I’m about to start using it ha

I love a high shoulder shot. Always have. I rarely shoot high shoulder on a doe or smaller animal that I plan on eating because of meat loss, but if you just want a critter dead... high shoulder all the way.

I did some load development with RL16 and 123gr ELD-Ms yesterday had a node at 42.0-42.2 that gave me 2841fps and 2842fps. Then at 42.6-42.8 gave me 2896fps and 2895fps. Loaded 33rds of 42.1 going to chrono it today and get a decent group and see if we can down this mature 6 point on the place today. All 15 shots from 40.0-42.8 shot pretty much a 3/4th MOA hole maybe a little larger with the exception of 5 shots that were outside of it.

Been racking my brain on whether or not to go to the 130gr ELD-M after i run out of 123s but it's literally splitting hairs until wind at 1000yds which is a 1/10th mil difference. For 600yd hunting though it's nearly equivalent to a 130gr ELD-M at 2750.

I have no experience with the 130 eldms. Only the 140 in my creedmoor and the 123 in my Grendel. I guess the thing you would be gaining most is a little energy by switching to the 130s. Other than tweaking your load, you probably wont notice anything significant by switching. Im about to start working up an RL26 135 JLK load for my creedmoor. I only have 300 so I won't be able to shoot these in my next 3 matches I have coming up but i'll see how I like them. Good thing about the JLK's is they are an awesome match bullet but they are equally good on game, so ive seen. Maybe the 135 is something you'd be interested in.

I've thought about them but hope they weren't too long thinking the long bearing surface would pose an issue with getting the speed up. The BC is ridiculous though and they certainly are accurate bullets. My girlfriend took an 8 point today at 330yds with the 123gr ELD-M today. I didn't see the entrance or an exit but he was basically DRT. I'm about to go skin it and i'll get pictures of the damage.

Spined it, hit a little far back but it was a tough shot for her especially for someone who's only shot a gun twice, I.E. the two times i've taken her to shoot. Punched through and caught the tail end of the jacket on the exit side in the hide. Last pic my phone was running out of battery and the flash wouldn't work. Temp is dropping fast here so i gutted him and left him hanging. Will go back out there tomorrow.

6.5SS pushing a 150 SMK @ 3117fps MV. Shot was 186 yards, broadside 5 minutes after first legal hunting light. Buck dropped at the shot without a twitch.

Entrance was a touch high (250 yard zero), exit is evident.

Tis the season! Scratch the first kill down for the 25 Creedmoor, a friends son shot his first deer at 610 yards this evening with my 25 Creedmoor whom I call “Quarter Lord”. Also a first was using the Blackjack bullets 131 grain Ace match bullet, seen left below next to three different 6.5 bullets (all 140’s).
war30n.jpg

The very flat shooting 25 Creedmoor needed only 9 minutes of elevation for a perfect coldbore hit at 610 yards.
