I am looking to start reloading for my .22-250. I am looking for suggestions for powder to use. I currently have an 8 pound jug of Varget for my .308. Will this worker is there a better poster to use? Sorry for the noob question but I am just starting to reload myself. My friend had been doing my reloading but due to a recent stroke he is ot going to be doing much with reloading or shooting for a while.

Look on a varget can of powder the load listed on the can has work great for me in 22-250. 39.5 gr varget behind 40 gr v-max

Another vote for H380. I believe that's how the powder got its moniker IIRC. 38 grains under a 50grn bullet. That's how I roll.

55NBT and 36-(36.5)gr Varget is how i roll....36.5 is a bit hot but mt Sako 14tw likes it faster...
be safe and work up.da-da da-da....

Varget... Edges out the 380 because of its temp stability

VARGET for light bullets 4350 and 4831 for heavier.

That 39.5 of Varget and a 40 gr. BT produced spectacular results for me. Have not touched the H380 since.

There are several good powders for the 22-250. Varget is great in it with lite bullets and it will be very hard to beat.
If you have don't waste time trying to find something else. Only down side is metering it.
If you shoot 39.5 gr of it your barrel wont last very long though!

We all have our favorites. I use the Viht powders. N135 for the lightweights(50gr or less) and N140, N150, N160 and maybe N165 if your gonna push a 90.

H380 and Benchmark for me with the 52-55gr pills. H380 is temp sensitive as stated above, benchmark not so much. Both meter extremely well!

Varget is a good choice. So is 4064, 4350, H-380. Probably several more that I have not tried. Lightman

Well, nobody has said IMR3031 yet, so I will 35 grains behind a 40 BT works good. So does H380, and I like Varget too. H4895 does well with a heavy bullet. If you have Varget, give it a shot.

Well I guess I'm an odd duck.... I'm shooting H4831SC with 80 grain amaxes. Mostly because I have a good supply (no small matter these days) and also in the (possibly delusional) hope that the slow powder will extend throat life
eta I see Missed uses 4831 with heavy bullets too. I would like to hear from someone that uses Superformance, it looks good on paper

This is the exact load my remmy 700 liked loaded to a COAL 2.35 and winchester primer. The Varget is pretty temperature stable unlike H380. It becomes very important when you test loads at 70 degrees and hunt pdogs at 105.

I've been using power Pro 2000MR with the heavies and getting amazing speeds. 34.5g pushes the 80g Amax to 3220 FPS out of my 26" barrel. Good to 1000 yards. It also rocks with the 75 Amax and 77-78 HPBT. For the lighter 50-55g pills I have good results with RE15 and AR Comp.

I'm out of 4831 so there is 4350 under the 80's now. I am going to pick up a pound of super performance if I run across some. Hopefully some 4831 will surface soon!

I am shooting out of my Savage 22-250 a 55 grain v-max over 39 grains of H414. My rifle loves that load.

Good to hear this as I have some 2000MR as well. I may have to "waste" a few more 80 Amaxs on some load development. I wish Hornady would start making them again

I like H414 in high performance .224" bore.

This.

I tried numerous powders and charge weights. All worked decent, but H414 just worked the best in my rifle by a significant amount. Not the fastest loads, but most accurate. 39.5gr. of H414 and 52 SMKs @ 3710fps and 50 NBTs at 3745fps.

I tried:
IMR3031
Varget
Benchmark
IMR4350
IMR4320
H380
BL-C(2)
H414

Maelstrom just curious about your rig ? barrel length, rate of twist you are loading for ? You got a butt load of great powder information and just need to match your pills to your twist then to powder! I liked some of the picks H4831 has been used forever and someone mentioned power pro 2000 as it is in stock at a lotta places! What pills ya plan on shooting! Targets or Varmints? Both ? :)

Varget as everyone has mentioned and I'll be an odd duck an throw out H4895 as well. Shooting 40gr Blitzkings as well as 55gr Varmint Nightmare HP's from Midsouth, both shoot quite well. If you want the loads let me know I'll post'm.

Mtn,
I haven't chrono'd the loads yet but I'm shooting them out of a standard 26" R700 Vmnt barrel. Didn't realize till I just looked but its the same charge for both loads fairly mild BUT accurate. 35.5 of H4895

I have had good luck with Superformance pushing 69g smk and 77g Nosler comps. Do not have velocity data but poi with the 69s is eight inches higher at 600yds than my max load of 4350.
