Since everything local and online is out of Varget Powder what else are people using to substitute. Looking at burn rates you have Winchester 748 and Vihtavouri N140. Has anybody tried the Vihtavouri powder?

W748 may be close on the burn rate chart however I feel a lot of people and I disagree with this. On older charts it was between H335 and H322. (Sierra Rifle Reloading Manual, 4th Edition and Vihtavuori 1996 reloading guide) Has it been reformulated and slowder down, I dont know. It doesnt seem that fast either IMO. A better ball alternative for varget is AA2520. I havent had any experience with Vihtavouri powder.

I really like W748 as a bulk powder for 223 with 55-69 grain bullets.
It meters like water.

It’s not something I’d really consider if heat sensitivity and low ES are major concerns.

I run 73 grain Berger BT in my 223. I just tested 2000-MR and it did very well. I use to run AR Comp or Varget. Getting more speed with 2000-MR. Established max just over 26 grains, node is going to be around 25 at 2850 to 2900. I will do a more refined test across 25 soon.

I switched to AR comp for my 308 loads and not only did group sizes shrink but standard deviations went down as well. Wish I would’ve switched sooner . I plan on trying AR comp under 120g amax/eld in 6.5 creedmoor soon ( hopefully this week).

I have used VitaVouri N140 in place of Varget in my 308 and it performed VERY well. The N140 provided almost the same velocity for same powder weight. It is also much cleaner burning than Varget.
