What kinda’ barrel life are ya’ll getting with the heavies? 200gr and up?

I’m getting ready for my third barrel. First barrel was 24” HV Bartlien 10 twist that went away after 1868 rounds, mostly 208gr AMAX and a bunch of 155 Scenars going way too fast.

Second barrel was a 23.5” Mike Rock M40 10 twist that I ran exclusively 208gr ELDMs and 208gr Berger Hybrids (both going about 2760).

I’m currently at 1845 rounds on the Rock barrel and it’s out of rifling in the first 4 inches or so of the bore. Only reason I bothered to look was the fact that it’s running out of accuracy at 1K.

I’ve got a Brux 10 twist HV and a Brux M24 contour on the shelf waiting.
I’ll probably get it re barreled in October.
I’ve got my own Serengeti reamer.

I have a Rock on mine and I think I’m in the 1800s as well, I have to look at the data book when I get home. I’ve shot nothing but 190s, 208s and 210 through it. So far there’s no loss of accuracy or velocity, the smith said the barrel should last about 3500 or so….

I have a bartlein and over 2000 rounds of 208 eld's at 2800 through it. I should have my smith take a look at the barrel, but no lose of accuracy, yet.

Those 200 grain bullets will thump ya!
They definitely do. I zeroed my rifle with some Prvi Partisan M2 ball I bought for my M1 and M1903A3. Then I switched to some HSM 208 A Max loads I bought a while back. The difference in energy was significant. The 150 grainers were mild and swung the steel target pretty good. The 208 grainers thumped more and knocked the steel off the stand and the stand over.

Custom 700 26” .30-06 AI 40° 1:12 twist, stacks Berger 185’s in the same hole.

These are old pics…I’ve since threaded it, and put a different score on it, but haven’t taken any pics as it mostly lives in the safe.

New Brux 10 twist heavy varmint barrel, 30” by my favorite PWS 2112. The black oxide finish is beautiful.

Other than zeroing, 99% of this rifle’s life is spent on Range 4 Quantico, 1K yards.

This is the third barrel for this rifle. Previous was a Bartlien (L) and a Mike Rock (R).

After 1800 rounds or so, I can’t hit 1.5 MOA target past 600 yards. It goes all over the place. Under 600, it’s okay.

I only run 208 Bergers and 208 ELDMs with the occasional 210 SMK.

Anyhow, let’s see how the Brux does.

Very nice! I’m surprised to hear that it dropped off at only 1800 rounds, figured the 30-06 would be good for at least double that.
Mind if I ask what your load is?

54gr RL17, Lapua brass, 208 Berger Hybrid 3.500 COAL 210M 2760 FPS.

Same reamer in all three barrels. German Salazar Serengeti .098 FB

Still shot okay under 600, but I don’t shoot it under 600 except in this case.

Edited to add: it even still grouped decent at 100; under a minute. It just began to suck past 600 with all three barrels.

Forgot about this thread, broke in my precision 30-06 2 hours into its first hunt. 20” 30-06 shooting the 178gr ELD-X at 2800 fps. Used its high precision to kill him at the super far distance of 1,296”.

You know, people are going to see that and blaze right past the " mark for inches and call it unethical. Until they do the math and find it is less than 40 yards.

Nicely done.

If you want to make it sound farther than it is just reduce the units until you get a big number. 32,918.4 mm = 1,296” = 108 ft = 36 yards.

But yeah that one was a fluke, heard a noise off to my left, went to turn and my coffee thermos fell hit the seat, foot rest and support of my metal tree stand in three of the loudest metallic clangs I have ever heard echo through the woods.

So I figure I’ll wait to see what made the noise before I climb down to get it. 20 minutes later I just happen to look over my left shoulder and he is just there at 30 yards. I was actively looking and listening that way and he just appeared without a sound. Had a stare down for a few minutes till he turned broadside and I was able to slide the rifle up and across as he turned back to look at me. That’s when I hit him and he stumbled at the shot then flopped and slid down hill.

My 54gr RL17 208 Berger hybrid target load used to run 2760 in the previous 23.5in barrel.
IMG_6102.jpeg

Exact same reamer/chamber combo by the exact same dude. Headspace is within .001 of the previous barrel. Only difference is the 30in barrel.

Guy spotting for me said he could actually see the trace leave the muzzle all the way to the target. “That’s one flat shootin’ load!”, he said.

I will definitely need to back this down if I want this barrel to make to 1800 like the previous ones did.

I’m “stealing” this load data
